About the Role
Runnymede Borough Council is seeking an experienced and visionary Head of Communications to lead its Corporate Communications Team. This interim role offers a unique opportunity to shape and deliver strategic communications that support the Council’s leadership vision and priorities.
You’ll be the Council’s subject matter expert and head of profession for communications, responsible for both internal and external messaging, service-based campaigns, and design activity. With a strong focus on reputation management, stakeholder engagement, and digital innovation, you’ll play a pivotal role in promoting the Council as a trusted community leader.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a small Communications Team, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
* Develop and implement strategic communications plans across service areas
* Provide expert advice to Officers and Members, including during emergency events
* Oversee internal communications channels, including intranet development and staff engagement
* Manage media relations, including reactive enquiries and proactive campaigns
* Lead the design and presentation of corporate documentation and visual content
* Own and develop the Council’s social media platforms, e-newsletters, and video content
* Ensure compliance with local government communications regulations and style protocols
* Represent the Council in multi-agency communications forums and emergency planning groups
What We’re Looking For
* Degree or professional qualification in Communications, Journalism, or Marketing
* Proven experience in a senior communications role within local government
* Strong leadership and line management skills
* Expertise in digital communications, social media, and campaign evaluation
* Ability to navigate political environments and deliver compliant, impactful messaging
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a flair for Plain English
* Agile working mindset with availability for occasional evening meetings
