We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable, highly motivated individual to the role of Phlebotomist. You will be joining a well-established team in a well-established practice. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Phlebotomist and ideally have worked in Primary Care before.


Main duties of the job

* Perform venepuncture safely and efficiently for adult and paediatric patients, demonstrating competence across all age groups
* Prepare patients for blood collection, ensuring comfort, dignity, and consent
* Correctly label, handle, and process specimens in line with practice and laboratory protocols
* Maintain accurate and timely patient records on the clinical system
* Monitor and restock clinical supplies, ensuring equipment is clean and fit for use
* Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures at all times
* Identify and respond appropriately to adverse reactions (e.g. fainting)
* Liaise with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure smooth clinic flow
* Support chronic disease monitoring programmes (e.g. diabetes, anticoagulation)
* Ensure compliance with health and safety policies, including sharps management
* Maintain patient confidentiality and data protection standards
* Provide a professional, courteous, and reassuring service to patients
* Participate in mandatory training and ongoing professional development


About us

We are a large forward-thinking practice with more than 17,000 patients, based in a purpose built building the centre of Chorley. We have regular practice meetings, with a structured meeting rota including whole staff meetings, clinical meetings, safeguarding meeting and protected time for training. We have a multidisciplinary, clinical team made up of 6 GP Partners, 5 Salaried GPs and 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, who are supported by a wider team of Paramedics, Pharmacists, First Contact Physios, a range of specialised Nurses and Health Care Assistants. We are a training practice and have a number of junior doctors working at site, including FY2s, ST2s and ST3s. The practice benefits from a well-structured management team which is led by a Practice Business Manager. Job responsibilities

Clinical

* Perform venepuncture safely and efficiently for adult and paediatric patients, demonstrating competence across all age groups
* Prepare patients for blood collection, ensuring comfort, dignity, and informed consent
* Collect, label, handle, and process blood specimens in line with practice and laboratory protocols
* Ensure correct and timely completion of clinical documentation on patient records
* Monitor patients during and after procedures and respond appropriately to adverse reactions such as fainting
* Support the smooth running of phlebotomy clinics and ensure efficient patient flow
* Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control at all times
* Support chronic disease monitoring programmes such as diabetes and anticoagulation where required
* Ensure safe handling, disposal, and management of sharps and clinical waste
* Maintain cleanliness, readiness, and stock levels of phlebotomy equipment and consumables

* Work within scope of practice and promote other concerns appropriately
* Deliver a professional, calm, and patient-centred service at all times
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, infection control, and clinical best practice
* Participate in mandatory training and ongoing professional development
* Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical records
* Work collaboratively as part of the wider multidisciplinary primary care team
* Demonstrate reliability, flexibility, and a proactive approach to workload management
* Uphold confidentiality, professional standards, and data protection requirements in line with NHS policies

* Adhere to all practice policies, procedures, and protocols at all times
* Maintain strict confidentiality in line with GDPR and Information Governance requirements
* Comply with all health and safety regulations, including infection prevention and control procedures
* Ensure safe handling and disposal of clinical equipment, sharps, and waste
* Use clinical systems such as EMIS Web appropriately and securely
* Participate in practice meetings, training sessions, and mandatory updates
* Demonstrate a flexible and responsive approach to service needs and workload changes
* Maintain a professional, respectful, and patient-centred approach at all times
* Contribute to a positive team culture and effective communication across the practice
* Report incidents, near misses, and safeguarding concerns in line with practice procedures
* Uphold standards of professionalism, punctuality, and reliability expected within a primary care setting


Person Specification


Experience

* Previous experience as a Phlebotomist in a GP practice, hospital, or community setting
* Demonstrable competence in venepuncture for both adult and paediatric patients
* Relevant training/qualification in phlebotomy
* Good understanding of specimen collection, labelling, and handling procedures
* Knowledge of infection prevention and control and safe sharps management
* Experience using clinical IT systems and maintaining accurate patient records
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a calm and reassuring manner
* Ability to work independently, manage workload, and maintain clinic flow
* High level of accuracy and attention to detail
* Professional, reliable, and flexible approach to work
* Understanding of confidentiality, data protection, and safeguarding requirements
* Commitment to high standards of patient care and continuous professional development
* Experience working in a GP practice or primary care setting
* Experience using EMIS Web
* Experience supporting chronic disease monitoring (e.g. diabetes, anticoagulation)
* Competence in additional clinical skills (e.g. BP monitoring, ECGs, health checks)
* Experience working with diverse patient groups, including those with complex needs
* Knowledge of NHS systems, pathways, and quality frameworks
* Experience in stock control and clinical room management
* Basic life support (BLS) certification
* Experience contributing to service improvement or audit activities
