About the role
We are seeking a skilled and proactive individual to provide technical and safety management support across the UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering. In this role, you will serve as the Departmental Safety Officer, working closely with Safety Services to ensure safe and compliant operations across all laboratories and departmental facilities.
You will collaborate with technical staff throughout the department and support the maintenance, operation, and oversight of biophysical analytical laboratory equipment, instruments, and facilities within the Bernard Katz building.
Key Responsibilities
1. Assist the head of department in the creation, development, monitoring and review of the Department's arrangements for safe working.
2. Ensure the effective operation of laboratory facilities and specialist equipment for biophysical and optical analyses, including microfluidic platforms, microscopy systems, laser‑based instrumentation, and laboratory automation technologies (, Tecan robots).
3. Provide technical expertise and user support for biophysical analysis and microfabrication equipment, enabling high‑quality research, teaching, and training activities.
4. Contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of the department’s biophysical analysis and microfabrication capabilities.
5. Work closely with the Department Technical Operations Manager and Head of Department to support the delivery of the department’s strategic research and teaching objectives.
Please note that this post is fixed-term to cover the substantive post holder while they are on secondment. The appointment will end in November .
About you
The successful candidate should have solid knowledge of health & safety polices & procedures. They should have advanced practical skills in biophysical analysis equipment with experience of running and maintaining equipment.
