What does an architectural technician do? An architectural technician is responsible for supporting an architectural project from concept to completion. They provide technical building models, created using current technology and traditional methods. The role involves a variety of duties, each day presenting new challenges.


Responsibilities

* Collate and organise technical building information from architects
* Prepare designs using CAD software and traditional drawing methods
* Make site visits to assess building conditions
* Investigate and offer technical advice on factors affecting building developments, including user needs, site and building surveys, and regulatory requirements
* Monitor designs for health and safety and contribute to risk assessments
* Coordinate detailed design information
* Prepare specifications for construction work
* Prepare drawings, plans, and documents for statutory approvals
* Obtain tenders for construction work
* Prepare applications for approval by regulatory bodies
* Contribute to meetings and document preparation
* Research new design processes, building legislation and technology


How to Become an Architectural Technician


University

Complete a Higher National Diploma (HND) or foundation degree in architectural technology, or a related subject approved by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). The course should be accredited and provide the foundational knowledge required for the profession.


College / Training Provider

Options include a Level 3 Certificate in 3D Design, a Level 3 Diploma in Built Environment Design, or a T level in Design, Surveying and Planning. Holding an HND or HNC may allow progression to chartered status.


Apprenticeship

Attend a 30‑hour-per‑week apprenticeship, combining on‑the‑job experience with college or training provider instruction. Apprenticeships are open to anyone over 16 and can lead to qualifications such as a digital engineering technician or an advanced apprenticeship in built environment and design.


Work Experience

Gaining practical experience early—through school projects, weekend roles or work with a company—provides a strong foundation and is highly regarded by employers.

* Freehand drawing ability
* Computer skills, including CAD proficiency
* Strong mathematical skills
* Strong organisational skills
* Attention to detail and design sense
* Understanding of building technology
* Awareness of how buildings and spaces are used
* Communication skills


Qualifications

* GCSE 9‑5 including Maths and English, and A Levels
* Level 3 NVQ in Built Environment Design
* Level 6 Apprenticeship in Design and Construction Site Management
* HND or foundation degree in Architectural Technology
* Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Architectural Technology
* Higher National Diploma (HND) in Architectural Technology
* Degree in Architectural Technology


Salary

* Newly trained architectural technicians earn from £27,000 per year.
* Experienced technologists can earn up to £47,000 per year.
