Mechanical Engineering Supervisor (Steam & Mechanical Plant)
Location: South Mimms, Hertfordshire
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Overtime: Weekend overtime available for steam checks and operational requirements
About the Rolegeneration and associated mechanical plant systems at a major new development in South Mimms.
This is a hands-on supervisory role responsible for ensuring all plant and equipment are operated safely, efficiently, and in compliance with statutory regulations, site procedures, and contractual performance standards. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering planned preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance, statutory compliance, and operational continuity across the site.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operate and monitor steam boilers, calorifiers, pressurisation units, pumps, valves, pipework systems, and associated mechanical plant.
2. Carry out daily plant inspections and record operational readings.
3. Monitor steam pressures, temperatures, water levels, and overall plant performance.
4. Ensure the safe and efficient operation of all steam and heating systems.
Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)
5. Deliver maintenance activities in line with the Annual Planned Maintenance Schedule.
6. Complete maintenance tasks in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, statutory requirements, and industry best practice.
7. Replace consumables and minor components as required.
8. Maintain accurate service records, maintenance documentation, and compliance reports.
Reactive Maintenance
9. Respond to plant breakdowns, system faults, alarms, and emergency callouts.
10. Diagnose and rectify mechanical and steam system faults efficiently.
11. Undertake repairs and minor remedial works.
12. Escalate significant defects, risks, or operational concerns to management.
Health, Safety & Compliance
13. Ensure compliance with: Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) Health & Safety at Work Act Permit-to-Work procedures Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) systems
14. Participate in risk assessments and safe systems of work.
15. Maintain clean, safe, and compliant plant room environments.
16. Support a strong safety culture across the site.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
17. NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, or equivalent.
18. BOAS (Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme).
19. Gas Safe Registered with: CODNCO1 – Commercial Catering / Direct Fired Appliances CIGA1 – Indirect Fired Heating Appliances CDGA1 – Direct Fired Heating Appliances TPCP1 / TPCP1A – Testing and Purging Commercial Pipework
20. Proven experience operating and maintaining commercial steam systems.
21. Strong knowledge of boiler plant and pressure systems.
22. Experience with: PSSR regulations Safe isolation procedures Permit-to-Work systems CAFM systems
23. Background within commercial building services or facilities management environments.
Desirable Qualifications
24. IOSH Working Safely or equivalent.
25. Water Hygiene / L8 Awareness.
26. HVAC or BMS experience.
27. Experience within healthcare, education, research, or large commercial facilities.
