The successful candidate(s) will be either a Registered General Nurse or an Operating Department Practitioner. Experience in scrub practice is preferred, but newly qualified practitioners and those developing a new skill are welcome to apply and will be considered.
Main duties of the job
* A Registered Practitioner who will support the perioperative team by providing skilled scrub assistance in Trauma & Orthopaedics.
* Apply theory to practice to provide a high standard of perioperative care to all patients, ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to.
* Willing to support and teach other members of the operating team.
* Lead a team in an operating theatre, using excellent communication skills to ensure efficiency and safe, effective care.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
This post is for Theatre Services and may involve working in Main Theatre or Day Surgery Theatres on a planned rotational basis.
The post holder will be required to participate in nights, on-calls, weekends and evening rotas to provide a 24-hour service.
Clinical
* Act as a professional role model, demonstrating clinical expertise in perioperative practice and assisting in the setting and monitoring of professional standards.
* Provide skilled assistance and care to patients in the operating theatre.
* Assess care needs of the perioperative patient and develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care.
* Demonstrate knowledge of current research, practices and procedures within the specialist field of theatre practice.
* Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team, patients and relatives.
* Work within professional codes of practice and ensure perioperative needs are continually assessed and appropriate care delivered and documented.
* Support the team within a given operating theatre/speciality, providing clinical skills and advice.
* Ensure all resources, prosthesis and items required for surgery are available, communicating with senior staff and the medical team if there are deficits/issues.
* Supervise the work of junior staff, ensuring quality and confidentiality are maintained.
* Ensure theatre team works efficiently to meet patient needs and maximise theatre utilisation.
* Manage own workload and support others to do this.
* Lead the Theatre Department in the absence of senior staff, informing of changes in workload/problems to a member of the senior team.
Measurable Result areas:
* Provide clinical leadership, advise and support junior staff, and advocate for patients at all times.
* Participate at departmental level in clinical governance and risk management.
* Participate in clinical audit to continually review and enhance standards.
* Support and contribute to review of Trust/Departmental procedures, policies and protocols.
* Support and manage teaching and induction of theatre support staff and newly appointed staff.
* Responsible for research and development, from audits to undertaking R&D programmes regularly.
Communications and Working Relationships:
* Maintain responsibility for own NMC/HCPC registration and practice requirements including revalidation and CPD.
* Participate in team, professional and personal development to promote continuous improvement.
* Develop and maintain effective communication with all personnel internal and external to the Trust.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Degree/Diploma ODP or equivalent level training
* NMC/HCPC Registration
* Evidence of continuous professional development
Experience
* Minimum of 12 months practical perioperative or other relevant experience - new graduates may be considered depending on vacancy
Skills
* Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients in the operating room/anesthetic room/recovery
* Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based practices
