Job overview

To be able to perform a wide range of MRI examinations of all body areas as required, producing high quality diagnostic images.

To manage patient priority as appropriate whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care, respect for dignity and privacy.

To work both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of the MRI team to provide a comprehensive and effective service in relation to the responsibilities of a senior radiographer.

Training will be given to enable the post holder to justify routine MRI
examinations.

To provide guidance and support to junior members of staff as well as patients and other health care professional.


To assist in ensuring the MRI service meets all waiting time targets and responds to the future needs of the organisation by participating in the extended 7 day working.


In the future this will involve new developments around extended MRI service provision.


You may be asked to work at either Epsom or St Helier hospital sites as required by the service.

Main duties of the job

 To give the very highest standard of care to the cohort of patients for which you have been made responsible and to be able to carry out all tasks involved in ensuring that any patient in your care is successfully examined and well cared for.


 To act as the patient’s advocate, ensuring that their needs and dignity are respected and that other healthcare staff exercise equal respect for patients’ rights whether a procedure is being carried out in the department or any remote location.


 To ensure the MRI safety of all patients and personnel within the MRI department.

 Position patients accurately for each examination, adapting techniques in accordance with the patient’s needs.


 To liaise with referral sources where clarification is required for justification of examinations.


 To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers, such as Doctors, Nurses & Nurse Practitioners.


 To assess specific communication needs of individual patients, with particular sensitivity to anxieties regarding the claustrophobic nature of MRI scanning, and the potential outcome of the examination. Use negotiation and skills of persuasion to gain the consent and cooperation of anxious patients to undergo examination and to be able to counsel patients e.g. very young or claustrophobic patients.


 To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients prior to, during and after an examination.


 To communicate effectively and empathetically with relatives of patients.


 To ensure that urgent findings are communicated (in accordance with departmental protocols) and patients are directed accordingly.


 To ensure all appropriate infection control measures are utilised where necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment.


 To participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the Department and Hospital respectively, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessment.


 To be able to lift and position the MRI coils accurately for each examination and be able to wear radiation protective clothing for interventional CT procedures.


 Safely administer contrast media and other drugs in accordance with
protocols as required. This involves ascertaining the patient's’ suitability for IV drugs and taking joint responsibility for the potential complications under the indirect supervision of radiologists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To take responsibility for ensuring that all aspects of MRI Safety are observed for patients, self and others. Ensure that all persons entering the MRI environment have completed a checklist and removed all belongings that might be hazardous in the magnetic field or damaged by it. All belongings must be safely locked away. Be responsible for the exposure of the patient or escort to the MRI environment, in response to the answers provided on the checklist, according to local protocol.

Be fully aware of the bio-effects of MRI and ensure the MRI scanner is
operated within safe limits. This will involve risk/benefit decisions taking
individual patients and situations into account.

Be fully familiar with safety procedures specific to the MRI environment – e.g. fire, quench (rapid loss of helium gas from MRI scanner with displacement of oxygen), and cardiac arrest – where there is a potentially fatal risk to staff.

To possess HPC registration and to act at all times to the standards required to maintain registration.

To carry out duties in accordance with Trust policies and departmental protocols.

To be able to offer definitive advice to staff with information about protocols, policies and working practices.

To carry out all aspects of the professional role to a superior standard and act as a reference for Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and students.
