About the Role
We are seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and driven Prison Lawyer to join our legal team. You will be responsible for providing high-quality legal representation and advocacy for prisoners on a wide range of matters, including parole hearings, adjudications, sentence progression.
This role plays a critical part in defending the rights of some of society's most marginalised individuals and ensuring fairness and justice within the prison system.
Key Responsibilities
* Represent clients in parole hearings, disciplinary proceedings, and sentence planning reviews
* Provide legal advice on prison law, including IPP, life sentences, HDC, ROTL, and categorisation
* Draft legal correspondence, prepare submissions, and maintain accurate case files
* Work closely with clients, often in challenging environments, and uphold high ethical and professional standards
* Liaise with prison staff, probation officers, psychologists, and other stakeholders
* Keep up to date with developments in prison law and related case law
Essential Requirements
* Strong knowledge of prison law, public law, and human rights legislation
* Experience working with vulnerable or marginalised individuals, ideally in custodial settings
* Excellent communication, advocacy, and case management skills
* Ability to manage a diverse and busy caseload independently
* Strong commitment to access to justice, fairness, and legal integrity
Desirable
* Prison Law Supervisor status (or working toward it)
* Experience in public law/judicial review proceedings
* Knowledge of parole board rules and procedures
* Ability to travel regularly to various prisons across Midlands and beyond
