Becontree Medical Centre in Dagenham is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and forward-thinking Practice Manager to lead our established and dedicated team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated leader with strong business acumen and a genuine passion for patient care to help shape the continued development of our practice. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective day‑to‑day running of the surgery, while supporting strategic growth and maintaining high standards of governance and service delivery.

The Practice Manager will provide leadership and management to enable the practice to meet its agreed aims and objectives within a profitable, efficient, safe and effective environment.

You will:

* Lead on the operational and strategic management of the practice
* Ensure financial sustainability and regulatory compliance
* Support and develop the practice team
* Maintain a strong patient‑centred ethos
* Drive continuous improvement and innovation

The successful candidate will work closely with the Partners and clinical team to ensure the smooth running of the practice and fulfil all management duties as agreed with the Partnership.


Main duties of the job

Main Responsibilities

Strategic Management & Leadership Contribute to strategy, business planning, and service development. Identify risks, opportunities and income streams. Monitor performance and lead change. Represent the practice at PCN/ICB meetings and maintain effective communication.

Financial Management Oversee income and expenditure, including Enhanced Services. Liaise with accountants, ICB, and payment agencies.

Human Resources Lead recruitment, retention and workforce planning. Oversee contracts and HR compliance. Manage appraisals, training and staff development.

Organisational & Governance Ensure compliance with contracts, QOF, PCN and regulations. Maintain policies and business continuity plans. Oversee Health & Safety, infection control and CQC readiness.

Patient Services Ensure high‑quality, accessible services. Manage complaints and significant events.

IT & Information Governance Oversee clinical systems (e.g. EMIS). Ensure GDPR and data protection compliance.

Job responsibilities

The Practice Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, management and strategic development of the GP practice. The post holder will ensure the delivery of high‑quality, safe and effective services to patients while maintaining compliance with NHS contractual, regulatory and governance requirements.

The role combines strategic planning with day‑to‑day operational management, ensuring the efficient running of the practice, financial sustainability and effective workforce management.

Strategic Leadership & Management

* Lead on practice strategy, business planning and service development
* Identify opportunities for growth, innovation and income generation
* Monitor performance against KPIs, QOF and contractual targets
* Lead and support change management and service improvement initiatives
* Represent the practice at external meetings (e.g. PCN, ICB)
* Promote effective communication across the organisation

Operational Management

* Oversee the day‑to‑day running of the practice
* Ensure efficient appointment systems and service delivery
* Manage patient flow and access to services
* Ensure adequate staffing and resource allocation

Financial Management

* Manage practice finances including budgeting, forecasting and reporting
* Monitor income streams including Enhanced Services and contracts
* Liaise with accountants, ICB and external agencies
* Ensure accurate claims, submissions and financial governance

Human Resources

* Lead recruitment, retention and workforce planning
* Oversee HR processes including contracts, policies and compliance
* Manage staff performance, appraisals and development
* Support staff wellbeing and maintain a positive working environment
* Handle disciplinary, grievance and absence management processes

Governance & Compliance

* Ensure compliance with NHS contracts (GMS/APMS), QOF and PCN requirements
* Maintain up‑to‑date policies, procedures and risk registers
* Lead on CQC preparation, inspections and action plans
* Oversee Health & Safety and infection prevention and controlEnsure business continuity and emergency planning

Patient Services

* Ensure delivery of high‑quality, accessible and patient‑centred care
* Oversee complaints handling in line with NHS procedures
* Manage significant events and support learning and improvement
* Promote patient engagement and feedback

IT & Information Governance

* Oversee practice IT systems (e.g. EMIS, Docman)
* Ensure compliance with GDPR and data protection requirements
* Maintain data security and confidentiality
* Support digital transformation and system improvements


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Minimum 2 years proven experience as a Practice Manager in General Practice
* Experience working within Primary Care
* Strong leadership and people management skills
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Financial management and budgeting experience
* Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office and clinical systems)
* Knowledge of QOF, GMS contracts and NHS structures
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
* Professional, adaptable and solutions‑focused approach
* Commitment to continuing professional development
* 5+ years experience in Primary Care
* Leadership/management qualification (e.g. AMSPAR, Level 5 Diploma, degree in healthcare/business)
* Experience preparing for CQC inspections
* Project or change management experience
* Additional Information
* Flexible working hours may occasionally be required
