Offer description

Clinical lead for the provision of the safe and effective collection of blood and blood components (apheresis platelets) at donor clinics.

To be responsible for all aspects of nursing and clinical care of donors, ensuring a safe environment for all when working on the clinic, including apheresis platelet donors who will be donating using cell separator technology.

The post holder will have clinical responsibility of the donation process on a day-today basis ensuring compliance with all organisational polices and regulatory requirements.

There will be a requirement for the post holder to proactively identify research and development activities in the form of 'Good Practice' initiatives with an aim to improve service delivery with guidance from clinical governance.

Be recognised as a clinical expert and a source of clinical knowledge and expertise for advice and direction.

There will be a requirement for all staff to flex through various teams and blood collection facilities such as blood mobiles, static sites and community clinics covering a large geographical area. There is a requirement that the post holder will undertake scheduled tours that will include overnight stays.


Main duties of the job

To establish and maintain effective written and verbal communication links liaising with other departments and functions working in collaboration with collection service e.g. nursing function and training and Clinical Services department.

Establish positive rapport with donors, developing high donor satisfaction and retention.

To be professionally accountable for own clinical decisions.

To be recognised as the clinical expert, providing advice and making clinical decisions, referring when necessary.

Responsible for feeding back local intelligence to influence the clinical decision making process.

To be responsible for the clinical activities of staff.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification


Qualifications, Knowledge

* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
* Experienced in blood and component collection processes
* Ability to assess donor needs that may be complex and subject to change.
* Understand the role the WBS plays in the wider community.
* Understanding of confidentiality.
* First Aid Certificate.
* Knowledge of working in a healthcare environment


Aptitude and Abilities

* Good communication, written and numeracy skills.
* Experience of managing staff.
* Confident in the use of automated equipment.
* Able to work methodically and accurately often with competing demands.
* Demonstrates the ability to promote and foster good working relationships within a team.
* Ability and dexterity to carry out venepuncture.
* Ability to be flexible in working hours.
* Able to handle blood, blood component bags and needles and a range of equipment without difficulty.
* Ability to speak Welsh


Experience

* Experience of working within a customer focused environment.
* Experience of working in a team.
* Experience in dealing with sensitive or confidential matters and an understanding of how this applies to the role.
* Experience of working with people at all levels.
