We’re looking for an ambitious Risk and Resilience Modelling Specialist to help lead the evolution of Northern Powergrid’s long-term network planning and resilience strategy.

In this key engineering role, you’ll develop the advanced modelling tools and insights that guide how we invest in assets and respond to climate change risks—powering 3.9 million homes and businesses across the Northeast, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.


Working as part of a high-performing team and reporting into our Asset Management leadership, you’ll be at the forefront of innovation—developing risk-based asset and climate modelling capabilities, delivering strategic insights to national frameworks, and shaping Ofgem policy engagement. Your work will inform billions in long-term investment and underpin our climate adaptation and resilience plans.

Key Responsibilities


The successful candidate will:


* Facilitate access to decision relevant climate and asset data (historical and projections) to assess and proactively plan for the future – this will include an understanding of the differing models and scenarios utilised for climate change projections and asset health, their suitability and the limitations of alternatives for different types of analysis
* An understanding of the impact of both chronic and acute risks on energy infrastructure
* Help to develop our approach to managing risk to the network, drawing on asset data and climate related research and projections and deriving models to facilitate the development of asset, network and system risk assessments, vulnerability assessments and adaptation analyses
* Utilise fault data and forecasts to establish vulnerability thresholds and trigger levels for our adaptative pathways to assist in our climate change adaptation planning and regulatory submissions
* Develop methods to understand the ability of existing assets to withstand future events
* Experience in statistical modelling and data analysis skills
* Strong communication skills to interact with subject matter experts in the academic and climate arena, including input into innovation projects

* Excellent technical knowledge, including a detailed understanding of the HV and EHV network
* Problem solving is a must when faced with the scale and pace of change facing us, not to mention the number of exciting challenges and level of innovation required
* Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders from across the business and wider industry
* Highly numerate with strong data manipulation skills


Essential Qualifications and Experience


* Level 5 or 6 qualification (e.g. HND, degree) in a STEM subject, or Level 4 (e.g. HNC) with a minimum of three years’ relevant experience
* Strong analytical skills, with experience interpreting data, risk modelling, and developing scripts
* Proficient in Excel, Access, or similar tools for sourcing, interpreting, and reporting on data from diverse sources
* Understanding of climate change projections and their potential impacts
* Knowledge of power systems and associated infrastructure assets


Desirable Qualifications and Experience


* Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; ideally with professional membership or working towards chartership (e.g. MIET)
* Knowledge of UK climate projections, climate risk modelling, and their implications for electrical infrastructure
* Understanding of UK electrical distribution equipment across LV, HV, and EHV networks, with an appreciation of UK regulatory frameworks
* Experience managing projects or programmes, supported by project management qualifications
* Proficient in data manipulation and analysis using Python, SQL/NoSQL databases, Excel, Oracle Analytics, Power BI, or similar tools
