Biomedical Scientist – Haematology and Blood Transfusion – Band 5
Main Responsibilities
* Work as part of a team to provide diagnostic laboratory services in Haematology and Blood Transfusion on a rotational basis across all sections of the laboratory.
* Participate in the training and development of other staff within the department.
* Participate fully in the laboratory’s 24/7 rota system.
* Contribute to the development of services to meet users’ requirements.
* Work in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and assist in their development and review.
* Receive and analyse samples submitted to the department following laboratory policies and protocols.
* Assist in the interpretation and technical validation of analyses in line with SOPs.
* Perform compatibility testing and issue blood and blood products to patients in routine and emergency situations.
* Assist in the maintenance of the hospital blood banks and management of blood & blood product stock control.
* Rotate into any area of the department as required.
* Prioritise the completion of urgent requests.
* Telephone or email important results to the appropriate person when necessary.
* Be responsible for your own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
* Validate and release results to service users as required.
* Maintain a high level of professional competence in all tests and investigations carried out in the department.
* Prepare and ensure adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
* Use consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
* Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, keeping maintenance records and noting corrective actions.
* Process internal and external quality control samples as required.
* Participate in quality assurance procedures in line with the laboratory quality manual.
* Participate in risk management of the department, including reporting of adverse incidents.
* Assist in research and development projects as required.
* Assist in the training and teaching of trainee Biomedical Scientists, new BMS staff, MLAs, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
* Participate in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
* Undertake continued professional development.
* Maintain HCPC registration personally.
* Participate in all other activities in the section that enable the department to maintain compliance with ISO 15189.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* HCPC registration.
* BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
Desirable Criteria
* Technically competent in a wide range of Haematology and Transfusion procedures.
* Good understanding of basic practical and theoretical Haematology and Transfusion.
Work Experience
* Broad and recent postgraduate experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion in a UK hospital laboratory.
* Experience of 24/7 shift work.
