We are seeking to recruit a Locum Consultant, fixed term, full time, to join our department at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The job is primarily based at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital with the possibility and opportunity to cover some pain services at the Bedford Hospital site.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and well-established team of Obstetric Anaesthetists at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. 'The L&D' has a total of 641 beds across all disciplines and serves a local population of over 400,000 from Luton, Dunstable and towns and villages in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
The maternity service has around 5,500 deliveries per year and is known as a busy unit with many complex patients, and also as a friendly and fulfilling place to work. We work alongside a Level 3 Neonatal Unit and therefore accept early preterm intrauterine transfers for management and delivery.
Luton and Dunstable hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from the hospital. There are many attractive villages and towns nearby like St Albans and Harpenden which has excellent schools.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will join the well-established Anaesthetics Department as part of a service development plan, where we currently have a new Acute Surgical Block (ASB)
Applicants must be included in the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics or be within six months of CCT accreditation. The successful applicants will provide a comprehensive high quality Anaesthesia service.
The Obstetric lead is Dr Rivers. The successful applicant will join a friendly team providing the anaesthesia service for the maternity department. Our delivery rate is 5500 per year, with anaesthetists involved in the management of around half of the patients, many of whom are high risk. Consultants are job-planned to cover the labour ware and the elective caesarean section list each weekday. Antenatally, there is a weekly obstetric anaesthetic clinic, a monthly MDT and monthly joint cardiac clinic.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. FRCA or equivalent
2. On the specialty register in Anaesthesia or eligible for entry within 6 months of the interview date
3. Membership of an obstetric anaesthesia society (eg OAA, SOAP)
Desirable criteria
4. MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research
5. ALS, ATLS, EPLS or equivalent
Registration
Essential criteria
6. Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice
7. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) orCESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)
Clinical Effectiveness

8. Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
9. Experience of guideline appraisal
10. Participation in relevant local audits

23. Excellent all round experience of DGH work
24. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Obstetric Anaesthesia
25. Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision
