We are looking for a Freight / Palletline Department Manager to take ownership of our Palletline Network operations, including trunking, cross-docking, and freight management, with full P&L responsibility.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Warehouse Director you will be accountable for the operational, financial, and people management of the Freight and Palletline Department. This role requires a leader who can balance day-to-day transport oversight with strategic development, mentoring, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Transport Operations & Oversight
*
Manage all aspects of the Palletline Network’s transport, including trunking and cross-dock operations.
*
Ensure smooth execution of collections, deliveries, and trunking solutions over a 24-hour period, covering priority next-day freight and economy service pallets.
*
Communicate changes or issues in execution of the transport plan to the central Planning team.
Team Leadership & Development
*
Lead, mentor, and develop your team, ensuring their professional growth and recognising their contributions.
*
Foster a high-performance culture with strong engagement between drivers, warehouse staff, and management.
Driver Engagement & Administration
*
Oversee daily start-of-shift briefings and end-of-shift debriefings for all drivers.
*
Address operational issues promptly and implement agreed corrective measures.
*
Ensure timely return of all Proof of Delivery (POD) documents and respond to related queries from accounts or customers.
*
Manage delivery paperwork accurately and in compliance with company standards.
Compliance & Vehicle Management
*
Act as the designated Transport Responsible Person for Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR), ensuring all are completed, defects are reported, and repairs addressed.
*
Liaise with the Compliance team to ensure vehicle availability aligns with transport plan requirements.
*
Release assets for maintenance according to established schedules.
*
Oversee driver compliance reporting, ensuring corrective actions are recorded and completed.
Systems & Administration
*
Ensure all jobs in the Qargo system are closed and completed daily, with accurate mileages, costs, and revenues.
*
Update all trailer movements daily.
Resource & Asset Management
*
Oversee the management of driving resources, forklift truck (FLT) fleet, and HGV commitments.
*
Monitor behaviour and performance of drivers and cross-dock staff 24/7, addressing any performance or conduct issues.
Financial Accountability
*
Manage the full P&L for the Freight, Palletline, and Cross Dock departments.
*
Take responsibility for budget control and ensuring profitability.
Stakeholder & Network Engagement
*
Maintain close working relationships with Palletline HQ and network partners.
*
Ensure KPI targets are achieved daily, weekly, monthly, and annually, in line with ATL requirements and the Palletline Charter.
About You
*
Minimum 5 years’ managerial experience in the Freight & Pallet Network industry.
*
Proven track record in P&L and budget management.
*
Excellent communication skills, able to engage with staff, customers, and stakeholders at all levels.
*
Strong ability to mentor and develop staff, building committed and high-performing teams.
*
Solid knowledge of health & safety regulations in the logistics industry.
*
Proficient in PCs, scanners, and general IT systems.
*
Comprehensive experience in transport, warehousing, and cross-docking environments.
*
Strong compliance and KPI knowledge to ensure service excellence.
*
CPC and/or IOSH certification (preferred).
