Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager
There are some roles that maintain standards… and there are others that shape culture.
This is firmly the latter.
We're partnering exclusively with a well-established and forward-thinking food manufacturing business to appoint a Health, Safety & Environmental Manager - a pivotal, standalone role with real influence across the site. You won't just be "keeping things compliant"; you'll be at the heart of driving a proactive, behavioural safety culture and embedding best-in-class environmental and HSE practices.
Working closely with the Site Director and Senior Leadership Team, you'll have the autonomy, visibility, and backing to make meaningful change - creating an environment where safety isn't just a priority, but a shared mindset.
The Opportunity:
This is a role for someone who enjoys ownership. Someone who can walk the factory floor, build trust with operators, and then sit at the leadership table to shape strategy.
You'll lead the site's HSE agenda end-to-end - from compliance and systems to engagement and continuous improvement - ensuring a safe, sustainable, and high-performing operation.
Key Responsibilities:
Driving Culture & Engagement
* Champion a positive, behavioural safety culture across site
* Engage, coach and influence colleagues at all levels - from shop floor to SLT
* Lead behavioural observations, safety conversations, and engagement initiatives
* Act as a trusted advisor to managers, supporting robust and practical safe systems of work
Systems, Standards & Continuous Improvement
* Lead and maintain HSE management systems aligned to ISO 45001 and ISO 14001
* Manage risk assessments, ensuring actions are tracked, closed, and embedded
* Oversee environmental aspects and impact registers, identifying risks and opportunities
* Use data, audits, and benchmarking to drive continuous improvement and best practice
Incident Management & Compliance
* Own the site incident management process - ensuring thorough root cause analysis and meaningful corrective actions
* Lead investigations, working cross-functionally to drive learning and prevention
* Ensure full compliance with all relevant HSE legislation and regulatory requirements
* Act as the key contact for external regulators and stakeholders
Audits, Reporting & Governance
* Lead internal and external audits, ensuring readiness and successful outcomes
* Monitor KPIs, providing clear insight and driving accountability across the site
* Ensure non-conformances are addressed with effective corrective actions
* Report on HSE performance to senior leadership
Training & Development
* Identify training needs and ensure compliance across the workforce
* Deliver engaging HSE training, including site inductions
* Build capability across the site, empowering teams to take ownership of safety
Project & Site Development
* Provide HSE expertise on site projects and continuous improvement initiatives
* Support the integration of safety and environmental considerations into operational decisions
About You:
You'll be someone who combines technical expertise with strong interpersonal skills - equally comfortable influencing on the shop floor as you are presenting at leadership level.
We're looking for:
* Experience in a food, beverage, or FMCG manufacturing environment
* Strong working knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems
* NEBOSH General Certificate (essential)
* NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards / willing to achieve)
* Environmental qualification such as IEMA (or willingness to obtain)
And just as importantly:
* A natural communicator who builds credibility quickly
* A proactive, hands-on approach with a passion for driving behavioural change
* The confidence to operate autonomously while influencing senior stakeholders
* Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
* A mindset focused on continuous improvement, not just compliance
Why This Role?
This is a genuine opportunity to own HSE on site - to step into a role where your voice matters, your ideas are valued, and your impact is visible.
You'll be supported by an engaged leadership team but trusted to lead. It's an ideal role for someone ready to step into a standalone position or an experienced HSE professional looking for more influence and autonomy.
