What does a contracts manager do?
As a contracts manager, you’ll be responsible for overseeing legal documents relating to construction projects and ensuring that any issues which arise are resolved quickly and effectively.
Key Responsibilities
* Preparing tenders for clients and commercial bids.
* Developing and presenting project proposals.
* Meeting with clients to define requirements.
* Producing plans, estimating budgets and timescales.
* Discussing, drafting, reviewing and negotiating contract terms.
* Agreeing budgets and timescales with clients.
* Managing construction schedules and budgets.
* Managing unexpected costs.
* Attending site meetings to monitor progress.
* Acting as the primary point of contact for clients, site and project managers.
* Coordinating with third parties to clarify roles and responsibilities.
* Ensuring projects meet technical standards.
* Liaising with technical, financial staff, sub‑contractors, legal teams and client representatives.
* Overseeing invoicing at project completion.
* Operating on-site and in office settings.
How to Become a Contracts Manager
There are several routes: obtaining a university degree, completing an apprenticeship, or applying directly for an employment role. Employers prefer enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and the ability to follow instructions.
Education and Qualifications
* Level 6 NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations Management.
* SVQ in Construction Contracting Operations.
* Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction or related disciplines.
* Higher National Diploma (HND) in Construction Management or related disciplines.
* Degree in Construction Management.
Desirable Skills
* Understanding of the construction industry.
* Familiarity with legal documentation.
* Mathematics and IT knowledge.
* Strong leadership and business management skills.
* Initiative and good verbal communication.
Salary
Newly trained contracts managers can earn around £36,000; experienced individuals may reach up to £84,000, depending on location, employer and training.
