Summary
Are you someone who cares deeply about achieving high standards, and helping to make beauty and history accessible to all? If so, you could become a Collections and House Officer at The Workhouse and Infirmary, bringing to life the history and significance of this special place.
You'll be working Sunday-Thursday, including Bank Holiday Mondays.
Salary: £27,612 per annum - The advertised salary for this role will be in effect from 1st April.
What it's like to work here
We're a relatively small property, with a friendly atmosphere, run by a small, dedicated staff team and wider volunteer support. You'll be working within the House and Collections Team, reporting to the Property Operations Manager.
This is a practical, hands-on role based at The Workhouse & Infirmary and includes occasionally working from ladders.
The Workhouse and Infirmary is an unusual National Trust property focussing on the social history of the poor, giving a voice to their stories and experiences. It is a complex place that challenges us to reconsider how we care for all in our communities today. With many connections to important contemporary questions surrounding welfare and inequality, it is an exciting time to be joining the team.
What you'll be doing
As the Collections and House Officer, you’ll be responsible for opening the house every day, and making sure there are enough people in the right places to give visitors a consistently good experience. You'll also be a regular Duty Manager for the site. As Duty Manager, you'll be responsible on the day for the smooth running of the property during opening hours, acting as the main contact point for staff, volunteers, and customers in case of emergency, enquiry or complaint.
Supervised by the Senior Collections and House Officer, you'll be responsible for routine conservation, preventive conservation, environmental monitoring and the annual programme of deep cleaning. Your attention to detail and expertise will help to ensure excellent standards of care throughout the house.
You'll collect and record information gathered during cleaning and housekeeping, to improve our knowledge and understanding of the house and all that’s in it. This includes delegated responsibility for the collections management system. You’ll use preventive conservation methods to improve how we look after everything, and how we present it to visitors.
You’ll deliver engaging ‘Conservation in Action’ and collections displays to enrich the visitor experience and contribute ideas for social media engagement.
