We are seeking a skilled Control & Instrumentation Engineer to join a dedicated process automation team. You will have full responsibility for designing, developing, and maintaining control and instrumentation systems across multiple manufacturing lines with a mix of creating systems from concept for brand new lines and creating modifications for existing equipment.
Control & Instrumentation Engineer - The Role
* Design, develop, and maintain control systems for manufacturing processes, including PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems.
* Lead instrumentation & control systems projects for complex manufacturing lines.
* Program and modify Allen‑Bradley PLCs (ControlLogix, CompactLogix) and associated hardware.
* Integrate process instrumentation, drives, and control networks into existing and new systems.
* Support plant operations by diagnosing control system issues and implementing effective solutions.
* Lead or support control system upgrades, expansions, and modernization projects.
* Liaise with internal departments, system integrators, suppliers, and contractors.
* Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
* Support training and development of team members in control systems engineering.
Control & Instrumentation Engineer - The Person
* The ideal person will have a strong instrumentation bias, with a proven track record of control systems design engineering.
* Proven experience configuring and programming Allen‑Bradley systems (RSLogix 500, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View).
* Understanding of functional safety, SIL, LOPA and Safety Instrumented Systems.
* Competent with control documentation (Cause & Effect, Loop Drawings, Control Philosophy, Schematics, FDS, etc.).
* Knowledge of OT cybersecurity, IIoT, and AI beneficial.
* Background in chemical, petrochemical or process manufacturing, ideally within hazardous areas (ATEX) beneficial.
* Experience in instrumentation engineering and AutoCAD proficiency advantageous.
* Flexible approach to managing multiple complex projects and changing priorities.
* Located in the Birmingham area, this role would be commutable from Wolverhampton, Wednesbury, West Bromwich, Dudley and surrounding areas.
