We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Occupational Therapist to join our Integrated Community Stroke Therapy Team, based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary Hospital. The post involves working across both inpatient and community settings within our locality.
Our Stroke Therapy Team operates within a culture of a strong, supportive multidisciplinary team which includes Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, and Assistant Practitioners. We promote an inter-disciplinary approach, working collaboratively to support patients in choosing, setting, and working towards meeting their goals, thereby enabling positive rehabilitation outcomes and facilitating timely discharge from hospital.
The team is committed to fostering an environment that promotes professional development and engagement with research opportunities, both in-house and in collaboration with local universities. Regular clinical and managerial supervision is encouraged to support personal professional growth, with interdisciplinary clinical supervision facilitated for Assistant Practitioners.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will manage a complex clinical caseload, providing specialised assessments and rehabilitation for patients following a stroke. The role requires using assessment skills to inform and manage appropriate discharge plans within inpatient and community settings.
The candidate should promote an inter-disciplinary approach to goal setting while maintaining a strong occupational therapy clinical focus. Collaboration with patients, families, and other MDT professionals is essential to inform discharge and planning.
Delegating work appropriately to Therapy Assistants and Assistant Practitioners, both in supervised and semi-supervised environments, is expected.
Facilitating training for patients, carers, and MDT members to promote meaningful engagement with therapy exercises, Activities of Daily Living, and Moving and Handling is also part of the role.
The candidate will support the Stroke Therapy team in delivering specialised therapy services and demonstrate ongoing engagement with Continuing Professional Development activities in line with HCPC guidelines.
Providing a compassionate, inclusive, and respectful therapy service to all patients and their families is paramount.
We operate from three main hospitals—Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal—as well as community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and RLI offer a range of general hospital services, including Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various consultant-led services. WGH provides general hospital services along with an Urgent Treatment Centre for non-life-threatening conditions such as minor injuries and illnesses. All three hospitals provide outpatient, diagnostic, therapy, day-case, and inpatient surgical services, in addition to local outreach services across Morecambe Bay.
