Job Description
Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Engineer – Open to all experience levels. Hybrid arrangement: 3 days on site – Bristol, United Kingdom.
As an Instrumentation and Control Engineer at ALTEN you will work on a high‑profile low‑carbon energy development, ensuring safe, efficient and reliable control systems for a highly regulated environment. Your focus will be on the design, specification, validation, integration and commissioning of control systems in a long‑term, technically complex, safety‑critical project.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, specify and validate Instrumentation and Control systems in accordance with UK nuclear and safety standards.
* Produce and review technical documentation – Functional Design Specifications, Loop Diagrams and Cause & Effect Matrices.
* Support system integration, commissioning and site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) of control systems.
* Liaise with multidisciplinary teams (electrical, mechanical and systems engineers) to coordinate plant operations.
* Ensure compliance with IEC 61508, BS EN 61513 and ONR safety class requirements.
* Participate in hazard analysis (HAZOP, FMEA) and provide technical support during installation and commissioning.
Qualifications
Required Skills
* Degree in Instrumentation and Control Engineering or a related field.
* Proven experience in I&C system design, specification and validation.
* Hands‑on experience with PLC and DCS systems (Siemens, Schneider, Emerson, ABB).
* Knowledge of instrumentation selection and calibration (pressure, temperature, flow, level).
* Experience preparing/reviewing FDS, Loop Diagrams and Cause & Effect Matrices.
* Familiarity with system integration, commissioning and SAT/FAT.
* Understanding of Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) and control philosophy.
* Background in nuclear, energy, defence, oil & gas or other safety‑critical industry.
Desirable Skills
* Experience with Allen Bradley systems.
* Understanding of cybersecurity requirements for control systems.
* Familiarity with change control, configuration management and technical assurance processes.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering.
* OR a highly relevant technical background from the nuclear sector working on control systems.
