Job overview

The post holder will assist in the routine daily planning and organisation of the theatres for clinical procedures and practice and participate in the department’s administration as required.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development of programmes of care and their implementation and evaluation.

The post holder will be a qualified nurse and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with an up‑to‑date PIN number.

The post holder will act as a positive role model, treating all staff, visitors and service users with courtesy, and undertake rotation across specialties where acquired skills allow.


Main duties of the job

Monitor and maintain the quality of nursing activities and achieve the prescribed standards of nursing care set for the department.

Maintain individualised nursing care according to guidance provided by the Professional Development Department and senior nursing staff.

Provide counselling for patients, their relatives and nursing staff as appropriate.

Liaise with colleagues and community staff to ensure continuity of clinical practice.

Provide assistance to the surgeon/anaesthetist/nursing/ODP colleagues as required; act as a member of the surgical scrub team either as a scrub or circulating practitioner (theatre nurse).

Co‑operate with appropriate departmental staff to ensure correct positioning of patient for operative procedure.

Co‑operate with appropriate departmental staff to ensure prompt collection and dispatch of specimens.

Check, witness and administer controlled drugs.

Person specification


Education / Qualifications

* RGN/RN or NVQ level 3 Operating Department Practitioner – Diploma / Degree in Operating Department Practitioner
* Proof of Registration with NMC (nurses)
* ENB 998 or recognised equivalent


Skills & Abilities

* Able to work under minimum supervision
* Able to work as a team member
* Able to manage learners
* Good verbal and written communication skills
* Basic IT skills
* Experience in a theatre setting
* Good knowledge of all specialties


Knowledge & Experience

* Knowledge of a range of surgical procedures
* Knowledge of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and AODP Scope of Practice
* Evidence based practice in theatres
* Understanding of the role of all practitioners in theatres


Personal Qualities

* Good communication skills with patients and colleagues of all disciplines
* Flexible and willing to rotate to all areas
* Flexible and willing to work a variety of shift patterns including weekends, nights, on calls and bank holidays
* Able to work under pressure


Safeguarding responsibilities

* Ensure familiarity with and compliance with the London Child Protection Procedures and protocols for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
* Ensure familiarity with and compliance with the London Multi Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Pan‑London Procedures.
* Ensure familiarity with and compliance with local protocols and systems for information sharing.
* Know the appropriate contact numbers and required reporting lines.
* Participate in required training and supervision.
* Comply with required professional boundaries and codes of conduct.


Legal and regulatory requirements

The post holder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties, and it is necessary for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to be made to check for any previous criminal convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020.
