Job Description

The Monitoring Data & Systems Team (MDS) manages key environmental monitoring systems and datasets. You will join a multi‑disciplinary team that supports and learns from colleagues while analysing and improving data that underpins our work.


Key Responsibilities

* Set up and manage users.
* Support users and resolve issues, especially during the transition to our new My Environment application.
* Update, improve, and maintain datasets.
* Respond to internal and external data requests.
* Support system improvement and upgrade projects.

This role covers Water Quality systems and data and may require support for other systems and data as needed. You will work closely with team members and be involved in the activities above.


Experience & Skills Required

* Experience working with large, complex datasets.
* Willingness to develop and learn new technical skills and apply them across monitoring data and systems.
* Motivated, organised, friendly, and helpful with an eye for detail; comfortable working in a dispersed team environment.
* Proactive and enjoys solving problems.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey complex technical information to technical and non‑technical audiences.
* Ability to build and maintain strong relationships and deliver through others to provide excellent customer service.


Other Desirable Experience/Skills

* Experience using and managing environmental monitoring data systems.
* Experience with Power BI, Access, Excel, Python, SharePoint Online, and R.
* Working knowledge of water quality monitoring.


Contact and Additional Information

* Work location is flexible but you must have a base at one of our England offices. Hybrid home/office working is offered, with some travel for meetings.
* Interviews will take place via MS Teams towards the end of December/beginning of January. Interview dates will be confirmed for invited candidates.
* A successful candidate will have an apprenticeship available for the role.

Competence 1 – Data and Information Management

Question – The MDS team analyses, interprets, records, manages, develops and shares data appropriately for a variety of purposes. Please give an example where you have demonstrated this competency and how you overcame the challenges presented.

Competence 2 – Takes Decisions and Solves Problems

Using the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) can help when formulating your answers.

Description: Finds and delivers optimal solutions by effectively analysing all information, probing to develop alternatives, and taking sound and timely decisions.

Question – Please give an example of a time when you solved a problem requiring perseverance and an eye for detail.

Competence 3 – Focuses on Customers and Partners

Using the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) can help when formulating your answers.

Description: Consults and collaborates with customers and partners effectively through awareness raising, education, and combined projects, ensuring buy‑in to initiatives and promoting the Environment Agency’s duties and policies.

Question – Please give an example of a time when you used data to address the needs of a customer.
