The Harris Federation is a leading education charity with 55 primary and secondary academies across London and Essex. Founded in 1990 by Lord Harris of Peckham, we now employ over 5,000 staff and educate approximately 40,000 young people. Our core mission is to close the gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers.
We have been recognized as a ‘top performer’ in primary and secondary education in the Department for Education’s performance tables. Multiple reports by the Sutton Trust have highlighted the Harris Federation as one of the best academy chains for transforming pupils’ life chances. Additionally, Watchsted ranks us first among 26 sponsors for improving Ofsted outcomes. Our focus remains on providing high-quality education to promote social mobility.
Main Areas of Responsibility
Our governors come from diverse backgrounds, bringing a wide range of perspectives that contribute to our success. Governors are expected to dedicate time to the role, typically attending four to five meetings annually, often in the evenings, and visiting their academy three times a year to observe operations and engage with pupils and staff.
Experienced governors may support panels during interviews for leadership roles or pupil exclusions. Being a governor offers a rewarding opportunity to understand the workings of an academy and contribute to improving pupil outcomes.
