We are looking for a range of volunteers for our exciting new donation centre and retail store at Clifton Moor, York, opening in early summer 2026. The new 16,000 sq. ft facility will bring together a furniture shop, clearance store and drive-up donation centre, with separate offices for our income generation team to operate from, including our e-commerce team, and will provide a major new source of sustainable income to fund our Hospice’s care. When am I needed? Exact days and times will be confirmed nearer the time but we encourage volunteers to come for 2-4 hours at a time, for a regular weekly or fortnightly shift. Initially we will train you up in one of our existing shops or the current donation centre and then move you to the new Clifton Moor centre for it’s opening and ongoing running. What will I be doing? We have a variety of roles within the centre and will help find a role that suits you, whether you want to be customer facing or would rather help out behind the scenes! In our donation centre you could be: Welcoming donors and accepting donations Moving bags and boxes of donations Sorting donations, either clothing or specialist interests Folding sorted clothing donations and packing crates to go out to shops In our furniture store you could be: Serving customers Moving furniture, this will involve lifting and shifting In our clearance store you could be: Serving customers Restocking the shop floor Paid jobs will also be advertised soon, so keep an eye on the website if you would like to join the St Leonard’s staff team! What skills and qualities will I need? Positive attitude and ability to provide great customer service for people facing roles Ability to work under the instruction of the manager and work as part of a team of volunteers Demonstrate good attention to detail Full training will be provided so a willingness to learn new skills or bring your own skills and knowledge to the role We are always interested to hear from people with specialist knowledge eg. Vinyl/antiques/books/jewellery/cameras/ watches/furniture An interest in, or knowledge of, clothing brands and trends is useful but not essential Ability to maintain confidentiality How will I benefit from being a volunteer? Volunteers will be supervised by the manager of the donation centre, furniture shop or clearance store depending on which area you are volunteering in. The Volunteer Services Team will help guide you through the application and induction process and be your point of contact for general enquiries about volunteering. Training Volunteers are required to complete mandatory training modules which are usually delivered via our online platform. Additional, booster and refresher training may be delivered as needed via e-learning, video links or face to face. You may also be invited to attend role specific in person meetings where appropriate.
