This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled engineer passionate about design excellence, technical leadership, and collaborative working. The Senior / Principal Public Health Engineer will lead the design and delivery of public health engineering services on complex, multidisciplinary projects across a range of sectors, including healthcare, data centres, and industrial facilities. The role involves ensuring technical quality, effective coordination, and successful project outcomes within agreed budgets and timelines. It also includes managing project finances, preparing fee proposals, engaging in commercial discussions, supporting business development and bid preparation, and embracing digital tools and automation to enhance delivery.
Responsibilities
* Lead and deliver public health engineering services on science and mission‑critical environments.
* Ensure technical quality and effective coordination of multidisciplinary teams.
* Monitor project budgets and timelines, managing project finances and fee proposals.
* Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced team members.
* Collaborate closely with clients, architects, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver innovative and sustainable design solutions.
* Contribute to net‑zero carbon goals by considering environmental impact at every project stage.
* Support business development activities and bid preparation.
* Utilise and promote digital tools and automation to improve project delivery.
Qualifications
* A degree in Engineering, Building Services, or a related field, with Chartered Engineer status (or close to becoming chartered) from a recognised institution such as IMechE or CIBSE.
* In‑depth understanding and practical experience in designing core public health systems, including domestic water, gas, and drainage (foul, trade, rainwater).
* Additional knowledge in process water, medical gas, fire suppression, and below‑ground drainage design preferred.
* Proven success in securing and delivering diverse projects, with the ability to lead multi‑disciplinary teams and manage external sub‑consultants effectively.
* Leadership experience on large‑scale, complex projects in science and industrial sectors, with strong awareness of relevant legislation and sustainability standards (including UN SDGs).
* Skills in project and team management, including mentoring, workload coordination, and financial oversight.
* Proficiency in BIM tools (e.g. Revit, AutoCAD) and a commitment to digital innovation in design and delivery.
* Excellent communication and report‑writing skills.
