Job Description

The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it for the benefit of our staff, communities, and environment.

Role Overview

Do you want to drive forward the circular economy and influence future waste legislation? We’re looking for a Senior Advisor to join our Producer Responsibility team to help deliver the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy.

You’ll collaborate with Environment Agency colleagues, Defra, UK devolved administrations, and industry to implement significant legislative reforms. You can make a real difference.

We need someone adaptable, self-motivated, and capable of translating policy into action. Your work will involve engaging with stakeholders across government, industry, and the Environment Agency to influence and implement legislation on workstreams including Packaging and Deposit Return Scheme, among others.

Providing technical advice within the Environment Agency and to industry, and working on reforms to change waste management practices in England, will be core parts of your role. You may also contribute to developing digital systems for waste management or delve into policy development.

Our team is dispersed and collaborates with technical and project teams nationwide. We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, although some travel and overnight stays may be necessary.

The Team

You’ll join our Producer Responsibility Team, which leads waste regulation reforms to meet government ambitions for resource conservation and waste minimization. We promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture, utilizing evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to influence policy, legislation, and resource allocation.

Experience and Skills Required

In your responses, demonstrate your ability to:

* Work effectively with diverse backgrounds and encourage diversity considerations in your work.
* Negotiate and influence outcomes positively.
* Build trusting, respectful relationships.
* Make risk-based decisions to achieve optimal results.
* Have knowledge of environmental legislation, especially waste management laws.
* Drive innovation and make things happen.
* Communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
* Utilize resources efficiently to meet priorities.
* Lead technical work and deliver results through others.
* Develop new approaches in response to change.

We offer development opportunities and appropriate training to support your growth.

Additional Information

We support inclusive incident management objectives and flexible/hybrid working arrangements. Some travel and overnight stays may be required. Please read the Candidate/Additional Information Pack for details. For queries, contact Roger.thomas@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Applications are assessed through your competency responses. Interviews will be conducted via MS Teams within two weeks of the closing date. If you consent to being on a reserve list, your details will be held for 6 months for potential future roles.

Contract Length: 12 months

Competencies

We evaluate candidates on:

1. Customer and Partner Focus
2. Influencing and Persuading
3. Decision Making and Problem Solving
4. Results Achievement

Each competency includes specific questions and guidance in the candidate pack. Successful candidates may be selected through initial sifting based on these capabilities.

Note: The Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service; therefore, employment is not as a Crown Servant, and continuous service does not apply. We welcome flexible working, including job sharing, and support applicants with disabilities through our Guaranteed Interview Policy.
