Assistant Ranger Apprenticeship - Level 2You will be working outdoors in all weathers as part of our ranger teams, supporting our strategy to restore a healthy, beautiful, natural environment. Your role will be working to protect and improve the health and wildlife richness of our countryside, preserving all the benefits we get from it and helping our visitors to experience and get closer to conservation of our special outdoor places.Your training will be delivered via a combination of mandatory week long college blocks and online learning, with all expenses and travel paid. There may also be opportunities to travel to other National Trust locations with some overnight stays to expand your learning and experience.You will be based in Keswick and working across the North Lakes (Borrowdale and Buttermere valleys). Borrowdale and Buttermere are recognised as places of spectacular beauty, with viewpoints which have inspired writers, artists and poets as well as walkers and climbers. The valleys have important populations of flora and fauna and a rich heritage of traditional upland farms. Borrowdale was the first land purchased by the National Trust founders in the Lake District, is internationally important for its Atlantic oak woods – the ‘Borrowdale Rainforest’ and has important veteran trees and pollards outside woods, including the famous ‘Borrowdale Yews’ and Watendlath ash pollards.Work will be keeping up with the day-to-day maintenance and operation of the these beautiful areas; this often includes: stock fencing and dry stone walling, installing footpath infrastructure such as gates and stiles, maintenance of the path and track surfaces, tree and woodland survey and management, wildlife survey and management, litter picking and engaging with the public, compliance and safety work. Working alongside your mentor on tasks specific to your apprenticeship, you will develop the skills & knowledge relevant to this apprenticeship standard. (Countryside worker level 2)You’ll attend, and prepare for, regular review meetings with your training provider, and be accountable for your own progression.
