Main duties of the job

To support the Care Group Manager and TOT (Matron/Clinical Director) in the overall performance of the Emergency and Acute Care Group, including national targets, financial, quality and safety metrics.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. We provide inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of community services. The £170 million development completed in 2010, together with ongoing upgrades, gives us a state‑of‑the‑art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre and Integrated Assessment Unit.

A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre opened in March 2023, offering almost 5,000 m² of additional clinical space to improve emergency care capacity.


Job responsibilities

Ensure that the operational performance of the group is effectively managed to meet agreed Trust and Divisional objectives. Respond to daily problems and resolve issues swiftly with clinical service leads or, where necessary, with the delegated authority of the Clinical Director/Care Group Manager.

* Manage day‑to‑day business of the Care Group, raising urgent matters to the Clinical Director/Care Group Manager, drafting responses and filtering incoming enquiries.
* Collate information and report on Care Group activity on a monthly basis for Care Group and divisional meetings and other internal & external meetings.
* Represent at internal and external meetings, committees and project groups as requested by the Clinical Director/Care Group Manager.
* Monitor Care Group performance activity against targets and other service objectives using regular reports, analysing information and taking relevant action.
* Collaborate with the Clinical Director, Care Group Manager, Senior Nurses and Finance team to set and deliver Care Group objectives in line with Divisional and Corporate targets and strategies.
* Ensure effective governance and operational processes within the Care Group.
* Deliver income and expenditure balance on devolved resources, working with the finance manager to identify service developments and cost‑improvement opportunities.
* Maintain accurate coding systems and processes to ensure activity is recorded correctly, impacting income streams.
* Develop and suggest improvements to current and new management information systems in partnership with the Information and Performance Team.
* Assist in investigating Serious Untoward Incidents (SUIs) within the Group and implement findings.
* Review adverse performance indicator information with clinical leads and the Care Group Manager under the performance management framework.
* Analyse service data from IT systems to monitor key performance and quality indicators, identifying changes that may affect services.
* Support formulation of Division business plans, incorporating service development priorities aligned with organisational objectives.
* Design, plan and implement policies and procedures for practice change, ensuring compliance with legislation and guidelines.
* Support CSL/department heads with protocol development and dissemination across the clinical area.
* Ensure clinical quality and effectiveness measures are developed and maintained in partnership with the Matron and Clinical Director.
* Coordinate specified audits within the Group, forwarding notes to the appropriate nursing/consultant staff for audit completion.
* Ensure all 18‑week and cancer performance targets are met within specific areas of responsibility.
* Communicate at all levels internally and externally regarding work, using clear and effective messaging.
