What You'll Be Doing
As an Apprentice Lab Support Assistant, you will support day‑to‑day laboratory operations at GSK Montrose, helping maintain safe, compliant, and audit‑ready environments.
Your responsibilities
Laboratory Support & Housekeeping
* Support daily lab operations to maintain clean, organised, and efficient workspaces
* Carry out 5S activities (sort, set in order, shine, standardise, sustain)
* Check expiry dates and ensure correct labelling per ALCOA+ principles
* Clean and maintain lab equipment such as drying cabinets and fume cupboards
Waste & Environmental Management
* Assist with the safe collection and disposal of laboratory waste, including hazardous materials
* Support solvent waste disposal and identify any issues or non‑conformances
* Escalate spills, risks, or concerns per site procedures
Glassware & Equipment
* Clean, inspect, and prepare laboratory glassware
* Ensure glassware is stored correctly and safely
* Identify and dispose of damaged items per procedures
Stock & Consumables
* Support stock control of chemicals, solvents, and lab consumables
* Receive, label, and store deliveries correctly
* Store all materials safely in line with COSHH and site standards
Specialist Support
* Assist with liquid nitrogen refills under supervision and strict safety procedures
* Support environmental monitoring activities and data logging systems
Health, Safety & Compliance
* Work in full compliance with Health & Safety, Quality, and Environmental standards
* Follow Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
* Maintain accurate, compliant records
* Support internal and external audits
Training & Qualification
* Complete a Life Sciences and Related Industries qualification (SCQF Level 7) over 24 months
* Day release at Ayrshire College, hands‑on experience in a live laboratory, support from experienced colleagues, access to Mitie’s Learning Hub
To thrive in this role, you'll need:
* Be 18 or over with a full driving licence
* Good level of physical fitness – active, on‑your‑feet role
* GCSEs in Maths and English (Grades 4‑9 or equivalent), or Scottish National 5 certificates (Grade A‑C) – Science subject a bonus
* Strong willingness to learn, reliable and positive attitude
* Ability to follow procedures accurately and consistently
* Confidence to communicate clearly and raise concerns when needed
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Keen eye for detail and commitment to safety and quality standards
Desirable (but not essential):
* Previous experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, or regulated environment
