Overview
The role involves maintenance and operation of steam boiler plant including statutory testing of safety devices and specialised ventilation plant. You will carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and breakdown maintenance to mechanical plant, machinery, distribution and associated services. This includes fault finding and repairs on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment essential to the operation of an acute hospital (e.g., building control systems, standby generators, low pressure hot water systems, steam raising plant and related pipework, kitchen equipment, operating theatre ventilation systems, industrial and domestic plumbing and drainage).
In addition to maintenance and emergency repairs, you will carry out installation and improvement works across QE Facilities' contracted sites. All work must comply with organisational and customer safety standards and national legislation.
Responsibilities
* Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance and reactive repair works on hospital equipment and associated plant, including periodic testing and maintenance of ventilation, decontamination, medical gases, steam systems, large heating and water systems, and other plant.
* Fault diagnosis and failure reporting; assess situations during emergencies and take appropriate safe action or summon assistance.
* Perform installation and improvement works; ensure compliance with safety standards and national legislation.
* Occasionally engage in heavy repairs and manipulation of equipment in restricted spaces.
* All work documented via a handheld PDA with required job sheets for compliance.
* Cover shifts for sickness and holidays; participate in an on-call rota and shift pattern (08:00-16:00 and 14:00-22:00, subject to staffing).
* Work on hospital equipment and systems including steam boilers, ventilation, medical gases, and other plant as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Qualifications and Experience
* Essential – City & Guilds craft Certificates Mechanical (Essential) or equivalent; Electrical and/or Mechanical BTEC ONC or relevant experience; current UK driving licence.
* Essential – Completed a suitable Mechanical or Electrical Apprenticeship; good customer service and interaction.
* Desirable – Maintenance experience in hospitals or a similar environment; industrial and domestic plumbing and drainage; HNC/HND.
Skills and Attributes
* Ability to work independently and take initiative; manage workload effectively.
* Ability to communicate routine/technical information clearly; work with discretion around patients.
* Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., ducts, restricted spaces, boiler house).
