To assist, under supervision of a midwife, in providing safe, effective, and evidence-based care to women and their families accessing maternity services.
The postholder will support and observe women and their babies through antenatal, postnatal, and intrapartum periods, reporting any changes or concerns regarding wellbeing to the midwife or team leader.
The postholder will work regularly without direct supervision, maintaining confidentiality and privacy at all times.
Responsibilities include recording detailed clinical information, completing assessment tools such as observations, and adhering to national, manual handling, and local assessments related to the health and wellbeing of mother and baby.
The postholder will represent the team as MCA and contribute to ensuring women and their families have a positive birth experience whenever possible.
Support will be provided to midwifery and medical staff in the maternity department. The role involves rotational work within different departments of the maternity unit and includes day/night shifts.
The postholder is expected to undertake a planned course of study at foundation degree level, including the Care Certificate, to build a foundational knowledge base for their role.
This training covers adult life support, breastfeeding, care of the newborn, maternal and neonatal screening, safeguarding, and health promotion.
Following training and consent, the postholder may assist in screening processes such as phlebotomy, glucose tolerance, and newborn bloodspot screening.
The role involves supporting users of the maternity department with their physical and emotional needs, providing health advice, and taking basic observations such as temperature, blood pressure, and respiration.
The postholder will participate in clinical governance processes, including following guidelines and supporting audits.
