This role will be an integral part of the Site Leadership Team (SLT) and will support both the SLT and the wider management team in ensuring site compliance with all Health, Safety, and Environmental processes. As a member of the SLT, you will contribute to the site’s strategy from a broader organisational perspective, participating in site strategy meetings, supporting the delivery of site-wide briefs, and contributing to the development of the organisational structure to enable sustainable business growth. The role will advise management on legal requirements, global initiatives, industry best practices, and prevailing organisational standards. The role will ensure the site remains compliant with Environmental, Health, and Safety regulations as well as Global EHS programs. The successful candidate will work closely with the Global EHS team and the other UK sites and where required, collaborate on multi-site projects. In addition, the candidate will drive continuous improvement activity within the EHS function, act as the facilitator for the site Business Continuity Program (BCP), oversee the Occupational Health and Wellbeing program, and ensure all site programs are aligned with Global EHS policies.
Main Responsibilities
* Participate in weekly SLT meetings and provide support to the SLT and Operational Leadership Team (OLT) by offering guidance on changes in legislation, global programs, and upcoming global processes that may impact site operations.
* Oversee the entire site's safety and environmental compliance, focusing on high‑level strategy and culture.
* Participate in the onboarding of new employees by delivering the site EHS induction and coordinating EHS training needs.
* Responsible for EHS training on site, including but not limited to delivering internal training, developing training materials, and organising any external training relevant to various topics such as Manual Handling, PUWER, First Aid, IOSH, and Energy training.
* Oversee Occupational Health and Wellbeing programs in collaboration with the site HR team.
* Act as the site lead to drive Continuous Improvement in line with the Global EHS Maturity Index, conducting gap analyses, scoring the index, and providing reports to the SLT and OLT with recommended improvement plans.
* Responsible and accountable for site compliance with ISO 14001 certification, including managing the ISO 14001 management system on site in accordance with the standard and relevant legal requirements.
* Responsible for gathering six‑monthly data for the Extended Packaging Regulations to ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements.
* Responsible for driving continuous improvement to achieve ESOS compliance, DSEAR compliance, and other related regulatory requirements.
* Participate in the site ESG program and support global ESG requirements on a biannual basis, partnering with the SLT to drive the ESG agenda on site.
* Drive continuous improvement and target delivery across all key EHS and sustainability metrics, including total recordable incidents, energy, carbon, waste, water and compliance.
* Conduct Annual Environmental and Health and Safety Management Review and all necessary administrative data.
* Lead EHS projects across the UK sites by collaborating closely with other sites and site management to ensure successful project delivery from an EHS perspective.
* Act as the site lead for hosting customer, regulatory, and internal audits, developing necessary CAPAs and ensuring their execution within agreed timeframes.
* Work closely with the Global IH team to ensure necessary sampling for Volatile Organic Compounds, dust, noise, and other relevant factors is completed.
* Drive the completion of risk assessments on site, including, but not limited to, Operational Risk Assessments, PUWER, COSHH, HDS, and Individual Risk Assessments.
* Act as the site lead for Business Continuity Plans (BCP) and Crisis Management, reviewing BCP programs, Recovery Time Objectives, and Business Impact Analyses; conducting annual site desktop exercises; and developing actions to continuously improve at the site.
* Be responsible for hosting Environmental meetings, Health & Safety meetings, and First Aid meetings, and participate in Mental Health meetings as required.
* Drive a Continuous Improvement approach for accident investigation processes, ensuring accurate recording and reporting of injuries in accordance with company procedures and legal requirements.
Work Experience & Skills Required
* Experience/knowledge of current Environmental and Health & Safety Regulations, risk management, accident reporting procedures and environmental auditing.
* Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
* High levels of verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
* Motivated, self‑starter, able to work without supervision on own initiative on tasks set but also a team player.
* Respect for confidentiality, with the ability to interact and develop relationships with colleagues and external contacts.
* Excellent time management to meet deadlines.
* Able to lead Continuous Improvement from an EHS perspective by utilising various CI techniques, including Kaizen, fishbone analysis, and Ishikawa diagrams.
* Experienced in Risk Management, Business Continuity, and Crisis Management.
* Able to lead and host regulatory and client audits.
Qualifications
* Environmental Diploma (NEBOSH) or equivalent.
* Diploma in Health and Safety Level 5 or above.
* Member of IOSH, IEMA, or IIRSM.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office package and Visio.
* Proficient in the use of various software (Permit to Work, EcoOnline, etc).
* Experience of operating at a senior managerial level.
* Recognised Risk Assessment qualification.
* Recognised Leadership Management Qualification.
* Recognised Risk Management qualification.
