Legally Qualified Person (LQP) – Police Misconduct Hearings
Location: East Midlands Region (Hearings may take place across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire)
Remuneration: Sitting allowance, plus additional fees for preparation, report writing, and reimbursable travel expenses
Eligibility: Must be over 18 and have resided in the UK for at least the last 5 years
Overview
Our client, on behalf of the East Midlands policing region, is seeking Legally Qualified Persons (LQPs) to sit on Police Misconduct Hearing panels. LQPs provide impartial legal guidance during cases of serious police misconduct involving officers or special constables.
Role Responsibilities
1. Provide legal and procedural advice to the chair or misconduct panel during hearings.
2. Support with or take delegated responsibility for preparing hearing reports.
3. Read and assess case files, reports, and relevant background materials in advance.
4. Attend and actively participate in misconduct hearings (typically 1–5 days per case).
5. Maintain impartiality and uphold the integrity of misconduct proceedings.
6. Adhere to relevant conduct regulations and legal standards.
Requirements
1. Must be a qualified legal professional (e.g., solicitor or barrister).
2. Sound knowledge of misconduct procedures and applicable legal frameworks.
3. Ability to provide objective and clear legal advice in complex and sensitive cases.
4. Strong communication, judgment, and analytical skills.
5. Willingness to travel within the East Midlands and occasionally nationally.
6. Availability to attend mandatory training upon appointment.
7. Successful completion of Management-level vetting (must have 5 years UK residency).
Additional Information
1. Applicants must complete an anonymised application form, optionally submitting a supporting statement (max 2000 words) and CV.
2. Those currently employed by Nottinghamshire Police should note the appointment will be under a separate employer, with length of service and tenure honoured.
3. Candidates currently identified as "at risk" must complete the relevant pro-forma.
