Job overview

Join a compassionate and forward‑looking Liaison Psychiatry Service at Peterborough City Hospital. This part‑time Consultant post (3 sessions per week) offers the opportunity to provide expert assessment, diagnosis and evidence‑based treatment for older adults (65+) in a busy general hospital setting, with cross‑cover for Old Age Consultant colleagues at Hinchingbrooke Hospital.


Main duties

* Provide clinical leadership to the Liaison Psychiatry Service, focusing on assessment, diagnosis and evidence‑based treatment of patients with psychiatric and psychological comorbidity.
* Collaborate with CPFT and NWAFT colleagues to ensure high quality, integrated care and meet agreed performance targets, including collection and monitoring of clinical outcome data.
* Participate in clinical audit, clinical governance and service development activities.
* Lead training and support programmes for staff, including clinical supervision for postgraduate psychiatry trainees, foundation doctors, GP trainees and teaching of university medical students.
* Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date clinical records and provide accurate diagnostic formulations.
* Provide cross‑cover for the old‑age consultant liaison psychiatrist at Hinchingbrooke Hospital during periods of leave.
* Support research initiatives through CPFT research endeavours and collaboration with university departments.
* Ensure compliance with Trust and service policies, GMC Good Medical Practice Guidelines and national protocols.
* Work within the rota system, contributing to on‑call commitments as required.


Detailed responsibilities


Clinical

* Deliver evidence‑based treatments and accurate diagnostic formulations.
* Provide teaching and support to acute hospital colleagues.
* Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date clinical records.
* Work closely with other consultants to provide appropriate cover across sites.
* Ensure efficient, cost‑effective delivery of services while adhering to high quality, evidence‑based practice.
* Contribute to teaching, training and mentoring of junior medical staff and other team members.
* Support audit, research and service development.


Administration

* Achieve key performance indicators set for the service.
* Contribute to collection and monitoring of clinical outcome data.
* Ensure accurate data entry in patient information systems in accordance with CPFT policies.


Cross‑cover

* Provide cross‑cover for the old‑age consultant liaison psychiatrist at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, coordinating with the other consultant across sites.


SPA time

* Incorporate SPA time in line with NHSE job planning guidance (0.75 DCC to 0.25 SPA).


Management and teaching

* Collaborate with clinical colleagues, Service Manager and Directorate Leadership to ensure efficient, cost‑effective delivery of high quality, evidence‑based care.
* Contribute to broader teaching initiatives, including medical undergraduate and MRCPsych programmes.


Research and clinical governance

* Support CPFT research endeavours and collaborate with university departments and MRC units.
* Be actively involved in clinical governance and report incidents appropriately.


Acknowledgement and appraisal

* Accountable to the Clinical Director for Adult and Specialist Services and to the Trust Board through the Trust Medical Director.
* Partake in annual appraisal under supervision of the Medical Director; arrange a suitable mentor if desired.


Person specification


Education & qualification

* Full GMC registration and licence to practice.
* MRCPsych or equivalent.
* Postgraduate thesis.


Experience

* CCT in general adult psychiatry or within 6 months of attainment of Higher Training CCT at the time of interview.
* Approved Clinician Status or eligible to attend training.
* Experience in assessment and management of patients in an acute medical setting, especially older adults.
* Relevant research experience.
* Endorsement or equivalent experience in Liaison Psychiatry.
* Dual training in Old Age and Adult psychiatry.
* Endorsement in Substance misuse psychiatry.


Skills, ability & knowledge

* Ability to work in a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Strong interpersonal skills.
* Enquiring, critical approach to work.
* Caring attitude to patients.
* Effective communication with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
* Understanding of the service context within wider NHS developments.
* Effective teachers and trainers, guiding own continuing education and training.
* Experience in delivering and developing services in changing environments and tight budgets.
