The Role: Mechanical Design Engineer
We are recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well-established and growing machinery manufacturer based in Bedfordshire. Due to increasing customer demand and greater machine customisation, this Mechanical Design Engineer position offers the opportunity to work on innovative, bespoke equipment from concept through to build and validation.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the full mechanical design lifecycle including new machine development, retrofits, upgrades, and technical documentation. This role would suit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys a hands-on engineering environment, collaborating closely with shop floor teams and other design disciplines to deliver high-quality, technically robust solutions.
Main Responsibilities:
* Creation of mechanical designs using SolidWorks
* Production of sales layout drawings in SolidWorks or AutoCAD
* Mechanical design of machinery in line with customer requirements and specifications
* Creation of detailed mechanical Bills of Materials (BOMs)
* Production of 2D detail drawings including assembly, part, and fabrication drawings
* Creation of pneumatic schematics
* Liaising with electrical and other design teams to ensure optimal machine performance
* Identify potential product improvements and support implementation
* Construction of machine manuals and technical documentation
* Provide technical support to shop floor teams during machine build
* Completion of internal quality documentation including test plans and validation documents
* Support resolution of build and design issues as they arise
* Occasional UK and overseas travel for site surveys or technical support
Skills / Experience:
* Recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering (BTEC, HNC or similar)
* 5+ years’ experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer within machinery or capital equipment
* Strong experience using SolidWorks (essential)
* Experience producing detailed mechanical drawings and BOMs
* Knowledge of pneumatic systems
* Experience with AutoCAD for layout drawings (desirable)
* Background in machinery build or commissioning (advantageous)
* Ability to fault find and implement effective design solutions
* Valid passport and willingness to travel when required
Salary & Working Hours:
Salary: £45,000 – £55,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Working Hours:
Monday to Thursday: 08:00 – 17:00
Friday: Early finish
Overtime may be required from time to time.
