Senior Speciality Fellow in HPB Surgery
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a 12‑month, fixed‑term position suitable for a post‑CCT (or equivalent) level surgeon with significant experience in the operative and clinical management of complex tertiary HPB surgery patients.
Job Overview
The post is in the HPB unit at Southampton General Hospital. The successful candidate will be competitive to take up a consultant HPB surgeon post in the UK on completion of the fellowship and will receive exposure to the full range of advanced, complex robotic and open HPB surgery. The Southampton HPB team manages HPB conditions across a catchment population of 3.8 million people across South‑Central England and the Channel Islands.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
The fellow will be responsible for inpatient and outpatient care of complex HPB patients and will perform 2‑3 theatre lists a week, gaining exposure to complex open and robotic HPB operations. Research and quality improvement activities are widely available. Appointment will be made under local contractual terms for Trust‑appointed non‑training fellow doctors. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should meet Home Office criteria before applying.
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and a named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post. CPD is highly supported and encouraged, with options to take study leave. Grades will receive a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, plus additional remuneration for hours set out in the doctors' work schedule. Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5 are:
* Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
* Hold a relevant higher specialty exam (e.g. FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
* A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates progression in line with the specialty curriculum similar to a deanery trainee

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems

Essential criteria
* More than 2 years’ experience in HPB surgery
* Evidence of successful completion of an ATLS Course
* Manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination
* Participation in audit
* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
* Demonstrate good organisational skills including the ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
* Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Desirable criteria
* Experience in advanced laparoscopic HPB Surgery as primary operator
* Breadth of experience with awareness in and outside specialty/medicine
* Evidence‑based practice use
* NHS experience with clinical governance and resource constraints; management/financial awareness experience of committee work
