Bromley Healthcare is proud that within our 0-19 public health nursing service we deliver The Family Nurse Partnership Programme- a national evidence-based intensive early intervention programme to support young first-time parents under the age of 24 years living in the borough.

The aim of the programme is to improve antenatal maternal and infant health, support early child development and sensitive caregiving and support young mothers to work towards their own goals and develop economic self-sufficiency.

We are seeking an enthusiastic nurse practitioner to join our small team of experienced family nurses to deliver this programme. Post holders will be required to develop high-level specialist skills to work within the clinical methods of the structured programme.

Family nurses will be expected to develop positive therapeutic relationships with clients and work intensively within complex family situations to achieve the expected outcomes of the programme.

This is a demanding specialist role requiring high levels of professional skills and practice and the ability to work as part of a team.

Main duties of the job

To recruit clients onto the family nurse partnership programme ( FNP)and complete regular home visits to deliver this early intervention parenting programme with young, often hard-to-reach clients.

To complete the Healthy Child Programme key contacts for review and assessment of their child's development,

To collect data with the client's consent and enter it into the FNP TURAS database which is used to analyze the delivery of the FNP programme and its measurable impact.

Job responsibilities

* To recruit and engage eligible, hard-to-reach pregnant young women to the FNP programme.
* To use programme materials and methods in the clients homes in order to achieve the following;
o improve the health outcomes of pregnancy;
o improve childrens health and development by enabling parents to provide more sensitive and responsive care of them; and
o Improve parental life-course by helping parents plan future pregnancies, complete their education, and work towards their own goals.
* To work therapeutically with a caseload of up to 23 clients and their families to promote behaviour change and positive outcomes for children and families.
* To take a lead professional role when required where children and young people with additional needs require an integrated package of support from more than one practitioner/service.
* To engage in weekly reflective supervision, to ensure that use of FNP programme methods is reflected on and that clients progress is monitored. This ensures that the service offered to clients is of high quality and the programme structure and core model elements of the programme are adhered to.

To work in collaboration with local statutory and mainstream services to ensure that families become confident in accessing a range of other universal health and support services and are ready to graduate from the programme when the child is two years old.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Nursing or midwifery qualifications and registered with the NMC*
* Degree level or equivalent professional qualification
* Willingness to undertake specialist post graduate training and be assessed on competence in clinical field following training


Skills

* Able to manage strong emotions, sensitive issues and undertake courageous conversations
* Able to develop supportive, trusting and respectful relationships
* Able to work effectively in a team, supporting others and challenging colleagues views and attitudes when necessary
* Able to sensitively provide anticipatory guidance to parents
* Able to manage exposure to distressing life events and stressful complex partnerships
* Basic computer skills to create reports, use email, read excel spreadsheets etc.
* Has a current driving licence and access to a car to use for work
* Demonstrates knowledge of attachment theory, self efficacy theory, human ecology theory and behavioural change theory
* Motivational interviewing
* Counselling
* Demonstrates a clear understanding of perinatal maternal mental health and infant mental health issues


Experience

* Experience of working with families in vulnerable or deprived communities
* Experience of midwifery, child health and home visiting
* Experience of supervision
* Working with children & families
* Working with young people


Knowledge

* Understand the difference between advice giving and motivational approaches
* Has some knowledge of the research base of NFP
* Willingness to undertake personal study to develop understanding of a range of clinical areas
* National and local safeguarding policies
* Attachment theory
* Self-efficacy theory
* Human ecology theory
* Behavioural change theory
