Job Description
The Secondary Teaching Assistant (Special Educational Needs) supports the educational development and personal growth of pupils with additional learning requirements within a secondary school setting. The role involves working closely with teaching staff to provide tailored assistance to pupils with special educational needs, facilitating their inclusion in the classroom and promoting independence.
Key Responsibilities
* Support pupils with special educational needs during lessons, ensuring they access the curriculum effectively and safely.
* Implement individual education plans (IEPs) and support strategies as directed by teaching staff and SEN coordinators.
* Assist with the preparation and adaptation of learning materials to meet pupils’ specific needs.
* Observe and report on pupils’ progress, behaviour, and engagement, providing feedback to the teaching team.
* Facilitate small group or one-to-one interventions to reinforce learning and develop key skills.
* Promote positive behaviour and social skills in line with the school’s policies and procedures.
* Support pupils’ emotional and social development, helping them to build confidence and resilience.
* Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN coordinators, and other professionals to support the holistic development of pupils.
* Assist with supervision of pupils during unstructured times, including break and lunch periods where necessary.
* Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies at all times.
Required Qualifications
* Minimum of GCSE Grade C/4 (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
* Level 2 or equivalent qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning (preferred but not essential).
Education
Secondary education to GCSE level or equivalent is essential. Additional training or qualifications in special educational needs support are advantageous.
Experience
* Experience working with children or young people with special educational needs in an educational setting.
* Familiarity with supporting pupils in a secondary school environment is highly desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
* Understanding of the challenges faced by pupils with special educational needs and appropriate support strategies.
* Ability to adapt communication and teaching methods to suit individual pupil requirements.
* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff.
* Patience, empathy, and a commitment to promoting inclusion and equality.
* Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
* Basic IT skills to support learning activities and record keeping.
* Awareness of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
* Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent.
* Training in behaviour management or positive handling techniques.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
