Employment Type: Full time 12 month fixed term contract, working 35 hours a week

Location: Hybrid · United Kingdom (multiple locations) Cambridge · Bristol · Brighton · Newcastle · Nottingham · Birmingham · Leeds · Manchester. Typically 1-2 days per week working from your designated office (one of the locations listed)

Salary: £43,993 (GBP) final salary pension scheme, generous annual leave, and flexible and hybrid working

Job Description

As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for managing Azure Data Factory, maintaining data pipelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. You will play a crucial role in supporting critical transition activities, modernizing legacy systems, and contributing to strategic planning for future systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in cloud‑based data solutions, strong analytical skills, and a background in computer science or a related field. Overall Purpose of the role

As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for managing Azure Data Factory, maintaining data pipelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. You will play a crucial role in supporting critical transition activities, modernizing legacy systems, and contributing to strategic planning for future systems.


Main day to day responsibilities

* Operate Azure Data Factory process to support National Lottery Project Grants (£30k and Under).
* Develop and maintain cloud (Azure) and on‑premises data solutions.
* Design, automate, and optimise ETL/ELT pipelines for analytics and BI.
* Translate business needs into technical solutions and communicate clearly with stakeholders.
* Ensure data quality, governance, and platform performance through testing and monitoring.
* Modernise legacy systems, drive automation, and leverage tools like Power Platform.
* Share insights via BI tools and promote open data practices.
* Support and train colleagues, deputise for line manager as needed, and analyse data for quality and consistency.
* You will contribute to a positive working culture in the organisation by taking a proactive approach to learning, responding to change, inclusive practice, and environmental responsibility.

What do I need to bring to the role?


Essential (Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours)

Technical

* Minimum 3 years’ experience in a data‑focussed role
* Experience in developing and implementing cloud‑based data solutions, preferably on the Microsoft Azure Platform
* Understanding of data modelling concepts and ability to produce, maintain, and update data models for specific business needs
* Reverse‑engineering data models from a live system
* Demonstrable experience implementing data flows and end‑to‑end ETL processes to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) systems
* Experience of effective and responsible use of AI

Knowledge

* Strong analytical background with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or STEM subject preferred, or comparable work or postgraduate experience in data analysis, data engineering, data architecture, or data science
* Understanding of the Arts Council’s duty as a public body under current diversity legislation, the current diversity agenda and its relationship to the arts and culture
* Demonstrable understanding of regulatory and legal requirements and privacy regulations, including but not limited to, the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act

* Highly organised with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and exercise effective judgement when organising, planning, and managing complex tasks
* Supports innovation, regularly provides novel ideas to help people, and advance process and technology which interact with our data environment

Desirable (Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours)

* Experience working with Azure Data Factory, Fabric, or the Microsoft Power Platform suite
* Proficiency in Python and/or R
* Familiar with DAX and Power Query M
* Experience of extracting data from, and deploying reports to Microsoft Dynamics CRM
* Desire for continuous learning and improvement, evidenced by relevant additional training such as accredited qualifications or e‑learning
