Department of Microbiology, Virology and Infection Prevention Control Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Virology

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC-registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Virology.

This is a role to support the Virology diagnostic laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to have experience in an NHS Virology/Molecular laboratory. The successful candidate will be required to participate in weekend working (Saturday shifts).

The department provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of this tertiary referral paediatric hospital, and also provides a specialist service to other hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a very experienced and dedicated team to gain extra skills and knowledge of paediatric Virology.

This is a vibrant, progressive, well equipped, and a ISO15189 accredited laboratory.

Main duties of the job

Main purpose of the job

• To assist in the provision of all aspects of the clinical diagnostic service as part of the Directorate of Core Clinical Services and Medicine Tests and Therapies (MTT).

• To work within, on a rotational basis together with other biomedical scientists, one or more section of the Virology laboratory including serology, viral real-time PCR, pan-bacterial and 16S PCR, sequencing.

• To participate in weekend working

• To participate in the research activities of the department.

Any other duties, which may be required for the provision of the laboratory service subject to agreement between the manager and the post holder.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training


Essential criteria

* BSc (Hons) degree relevant Biomedical science
* Health and Care Professions Council registered as Biomedical Scientist
* IBMS Specialist Portfolio or Log book


Desirable criteria

* MIBMS or equivalent

Experience/Knowledge

* Knowledge of the day to day running of a diagnostic laboratory
* Experience of providing appropriate training to members of staff such as support staff
* Patient confidentiality and Data protection
* Practical experience in virology
* Experience with paediatric samples


Desirable criteria

* Knowledge or experience working and maintaining containment Level III Laboratory

* Practical Laboratory Experience
* Ability to work without supervision after training
* Ability to carry out audits and support quality
* Ability to pick up techniques quickly
* Ability to work unsupervised

* Knowledge about autoclaves and waste disposal

* Good interpersonal skills

* Ability to supervise less experienced staff
