Job Description:
BEAR Scotland inspects, manages, and maintains over 2500km of Scotland’s truck road network, including 1500 trunk road structures in the North West of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. We operate in some of the most scenic yet challenging parts of the country, working on various structures such as historical masonry arch bridges, culverts, walls, and iconic major structures like Kessock, Skye, Connel, and Dornoch Bridges.
An opportunity has arisen within BEAR Scotland’s North West Bridges Team for a Bridge Engineer to work in our Inverness office. The role involves assisting with project management, inspection, investigation, design, procurement, supervision of maintenance works, and updating records including Health & Safety files and Operation & Maintenance manuals. Candidates with experience as a Graduate or Senior Bridge Engineer will also be considered.
BEAR Scotland is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers and offers a training scheme to support Engineers seeking professional qualification. Candidates should hold a Civil Engineering degree and relevant experience.
We seek self-motivated individuals interested in managing a diverse work program. The successful candidates will have good communication skills, be flexible, and hold a valid driving license.
Job Purpose:
The Bridge Engineer will support Senior or Principal Engineers with daily activities related to managing and maintaining major bridges in the NW unit, ensuring work is completed to technical standards, on time, and within budget.
Responsibilities and Activities include (but are not limited to):
* Design of bridge maintenance projects and maintaining design records
* Detailed design following current standards (DMRB, MCHW, Eurocodes, British Standards)
* Deliver work on schedule and budget, plan workload
* Comply with Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality procedures
* Ensure environmental compliance and mitigation measures
* Update structural records in management systems
* Monitor and control costs effectively
* Build relationships with clients and stakeholders
* Assist with media releases and correspondence
* Participate in CDM Regulations compliance and risk assessments
* Help produce Health & Safety Information packs
* Manage and supervise subcontractors on-site
* Support other team members as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
* Degree in Civil Engineering
* Relevant field experience
* Practical knowledge of DMRB, MCHW, and related standards
* Valid UK driving license
