South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) is on a transformational journey that will fully integrate our existing pathology services, providing the best possible service for patients and clinicians across the Integrated Care System.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent full‑time and a fixed‑term part‑time Biomedical Science Assistant within the department of Blood Sciences.
Key Responsibilities
* Pre‑analytical processing of samples including receipt, preparation and processing; store, retrieve and dispose of biological material according to the relevant procedures.
* Answer direct queries from medical staff, nursing staff and other service users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.
* Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.
* Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training.
* Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies.
* Maintain clinical records in relation to activities carried out and may input/interrogate test results of others.
* May be required to supervise, organise and allocate work and/or train less experienced staff in own area.
* Work variable shifts (including nights, weekends and Bank Holidays) on the Barnsley site.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
* GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above or Level 2 qualification e.g. NVQ, Apprenticeship, or some laboratory experience.
* Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy.
* Keyboard and basic IT skills.
* Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues.
* Effective communication skills, written and oral.
* Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work.
* Patients first – Understanding of how laboratory services are part of the patient pathway and impact on patient care.
* Respectful – Developed interpersonal skills and ability to communicate at all levels.
* Ownership – Understand the need to accept responsibility for own actions and ensure accuracy and attention to detail.
* Unity – Ability to work as part of a team.
* Delivery – Ability to work within defined timescales.
Desirable Criteria:
* Experience of some simple laboratory techniques.
* Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices.
* Previous NHS laboratory experience.
Qualifications and Experience
GCSE in Maths and English at level C/4 or above, Level 2 qualification or equivalent laboratory experience. Previous NHS laboratory experience is desirable.
Skills and Knowledge
Keyboard and basic IT skills, awareness of Health & Safety issues, effective communication skills (written and oral), ability to plan and prioritise.
