Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.

Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Job overview

A fantastic opportunity as arisen in Alan Apley Ward - we are currently looking for a Nurse to come and join our Senior Team on the ward.

We are a 22-bedded unit that cares for a wide range of patients with Medical Gastro conditions, such as Liver disorders, Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, Pancreatitis, and many others. We have 2 dedicated Medical teams on the ward that support the nursing team to provide high quality care to our patients. We work closely with Nutrition Team to optimise our patients conditions, and all of our nurses are trained and competent in administering Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).

The ward also runs an ambulatory service ‘Gastroenterology day unit’ (GDU) which treats day cases who require complex biologic infusions, blood transfusions and paracentesis and has a nurse led clinic, providing our patients with specialist follow-up care, aiming to reduce A&E returns, improve quality of care, and a better patient experience.

We have a dedicated Practice Development Team that works alongside the nurses on the ward, providing tailored support as you progress in your nursing career.

The successful candidate will be given a minimum of 2 supernumerary weeks, promoting a smooth integration on the Unit.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Nurse, you will be utilising your time on the ward in both Clinical Practice and Managerial Roles. You will be able to spend time with patients, support new staff on the ward and nursing students, as well as having dedicated time to complete administrative duties.

Time and training will be provided, and you will be working alongside the Charge Nurse and the rest of the Senior Team as a way to develop management skills. You will be allocated a team of Nurses and Nursing Assistants, and will be responsible to conduct regular one-to-one conversations and PDRs with them.

Besides that you will be introduced to other admin tasks, such as complex rostering, performance managing, clinical audits, etc.

You will also be expected to be involved with the recruitment and selection process and full training will be offered. You will also be expected to look into incidents and learning that may arise from these.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
* Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
* Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products.
* Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same.
* Ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
* To provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring the planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised care.
* Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
* Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advance clinical skills and responsible for carrying out specialist nursing procedures to area.
* Ensure that sensitive patient records are stored appropriately.
* Ensure staff take precautions to minimise the risk of cross infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids (including blood).
* To be an effective communicator with patients regarding their treatment and management.
* Facilitate a high quality, cost effective specialist service through monitoring and audit and other quality initiatives agreed by the Trust.
* Identify and intervene where circumstances contribute to an unsafe environment for patients and staff. To bring instances to the attention of the Sister/Charge Nurse for the area.
* Ensure that the learning environment and specialist training is appropriate for both pre and post registration learners and participate in the development of appropriate programmes.
* Contribute in the Trust’s clinical supervision programme for staff.
* To assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in developing a culture that is challenging, stimulating, rewarding and supportive.
* To act as mentor/assessor to unqualified staff and to provide education, advice and support to a team of nurses.
* Utilise research findings in the delivery of specialist patient care, developing new ways of working and to disseminate relevant information to staff.
* Provide a leadership role model and demonstrate specialist knowledge and high standards of clinical practice and provide support or advice when necessary.
* Maintain accurate records of the clinical service and ensuring that confidentiality of information is adhered to.
* Organise own work and manage own caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and other staff members.
* Take an active role in risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimise risk. Ensuring incidents and near misses are reported, through promoting a no blame culture.
* To create an environment that fosters good communication between patient and health care professionals, that meets individual’s needs.

Qualifications

* RN1/ RN2/ RN12 or Registered Nurse on the NMC register
* Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD
* Post registration qualification in or demonstrate relevant experience and competence (appropriate area of speciality)
* Standards for Student Supervision, Assessment & Preceptorship

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

* Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients and give relevant advice/information to patients and relatives.
* Be a skilled and effective communicator with patients/cares/family regarding treatment and disease management
* Experience of teaching/assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting.
* Supervision of junior staff
* Experienced and competent in the management of patients within the speciality
