You will act as the subject matter expert for environmental protection, ensuring regulatory compliance while embedding sustainable practices throughout the full project lifecycle. Working closely with engineering, safety, and programme teams, you will play a critical role in identifying, assessing, and mitigating environmental risks across complex air system developments.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the development and implementation of environmental management strategies across programmes
• Ensure compliance with UK Ministry of Defence environmental requirements and standards
• Deliver environmental artefacts for defence air systems, including Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Case Reports, Environmental Hazard Logs, and sustainability and lifecycle assessments
• Integrate environmental considerations into design, development, operation, and disposal phases
• Identify and manage environmental risks and opportunities across projects
• Act as the primary interface with regulators, customers, and internal stakeholders
• Support audits, reviews, and approvals aligned with MOD assurance processes
• Provide guidance and mentorship on environmental best practices across teams
• Contribute to continuous improvement of environmental tools, frameworks, and processes
Requirements
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in an environmental role within aerospace and or defence
• Strong working knowledge of UK MOD POEMS, DEF STAN 00-51, and MAA RA 1801
• Proven experience delivering environmental artefacts for defence air systems such as UAVs, aircraft, or related platforms
• Experience supporting safety and environmental cases within regulated programmes
• Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability, or a related discipline
• Professional membership such as IEMA is desirable

• Strong understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks across the UK and internationally
• Ability to integrate environmental requirements into complex engineering programmes
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
• Analytical mindset with experience in risk assessment and mitigation
• Ability to work independently and lead environmental workstreams
• Familiarity with lifecycle thinking and sustainable design principles
