Job overview

There is an exciting opportunity for an established experienced paediatric intensive care nurse to join our dynamic and innovative team who jointly share a vision and culture to deliver exceptional care to critically ill children and their families.

The PICU is an established 16 bedded tertiary unit within the new Evelina Cardio-Respiratory and Intensive Care directorate based at The Royal Brompton Hospital site.

In order to establish an effective nurse workforce, with collaborative working, we will encourage and facilitate, where possible, cross site working patterns offering equal opportunities for the whole team.

The successful candidate will have an integral role in coordinating and delivering excellent care to critically unwell children and supporting their families and carers. Being a clinical expert is essential in the area of pediatric critical care, and carrying the vision and values of the critical care team into this area. Experience of managing a team would be preferable and excellent organisational and leadership skills are essential.

Main duties of the job

This post is for a band 7 ward sister / charge nurse within the PICU at The Royal Brompton site. The post holder will be expected to lead the nursing team both clinically and managerially.

The successful individual will have substantial post registration experience as a senior staff nurse and above. As a band 7 you would bring excellent clinical skills and knowledge, and a desire to maintain and role model a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. You should have evidence of prior leadership and management and should illustrate a commitment to continuously developing your professional skills. The successful applicant will be integral to the ongoing recruitment and training of the PICU nursing team, supported by the Critical Care Nursing leadership team of Matron and Lead Nurse.

Working for our organisation

From 1st April 2022, Children's services at The Royal Brompton Hospital site became part of the Cardiac, Respiratory and Intensive Care Directorate at Evelina London Clinical group, which is part of. With over 3,000 dedicated staff, and led by an Executive Team and Board, we have significant devolved autonomy to focus operationally and strategically upon the needs of our patients. We also benefit from being part of a large and successful NHS foundation trust, whose values we share. We have an ambitious strategic development programme, with backing from Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Our current cardiac, respiratory and intensive care services are offered across both Evelina and Royal Brompton hospital sites. Our vision has always been to co-locate these services on the Evelina site and we have been working towards this over the past few years.

We are aiming to co-locate the inpatient services to the Evelina site in the spring of next year and are currently working through the different estates options that are available including a new ward, Edward ward, within North Wing. We strive to provide open and transparent communication with all our staff and update staff regularly.

All inpatient nursing staff will transition with the services and will be involved in helping us become one of the world’s leading services in cardiology, respiratory and intensive care for children and their families.

Clinical Duties

1. Lead the ward/Department team and build successful links between key professionals to support and promote effective multi-disciplinary team working.
2. Manage the department nursing staff, ensuring the patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines
3. Be wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
4. Communicate effectively and efficiently and liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that patients receive seamless care within the trust.
5. Act as a professional nurse leader and role model to the staff. To apply
clinical skills of the highest standard and to take a proactive approach to the development of clinical competence in self and others.
6. Maximise use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, admission and discharge arrangements.
7. Monitor monthly budget statements, identifying trends, understanding spending patterns in order to stay in budget and to take action as required.
8. Comply with the Trust’s standing financial instructions.
9. Ensure that the departments have adequate resources / equipment to
provide an effective service.
10. Develop and maintain effective channels of communication between all members of the multi disciplinary team.
11. To ensure the Matron is informed when changes to circumstances may affect safe competent practice
12. Participate in nursing and multi professional research and audit and to implement actions identified from quality initiatives.
13. Identify and intervene where circumstances contribute to an unsafe
environment for patients and staff. To bring instances to the attention of the Matron / Head of Nursing for the area.
14. Lead and support the ward team through the process of change,
demonstrating tenacity, drive, professional integrity, balance and
perspective.
15. Deputise for the Matron as appropriate
16. Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication
including transfusion of blood
17. Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the
speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same
18. Act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.

Person specification

Qualifications/ Education Professional / Statutory registration

Essential criteria

21. RN1 /RN2 / RN12 or RN Child registered nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality
22. Evidence of ongoing professional development in relevant area of speciality supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD
23. Mentorship qualification
24. Management Qualification oe equivalent experience
