We are seeking a Clinical Engineer preferably with several years experience in the NHS to join the team at Dorset County Hospital. We will prioritise candidates with such experience over those with formal academic qualifications, however we are willing to consider those with less experience for initial appointment at Band 4.
This post is part of Clinical Engineering service that may transfer to an NHS wholly owned subsidiary in the next six to 12 months. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing organisation committed to NHS values and putting patients first. The NHS subsidiary will continue to offer NHS AFC T&Cs to transferring staff and new employees who join after the transfer date in 2026
Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Engineer, the post holder will, under the direction of a Senior Clinical Engineer, will be responsible for:
* Undertaking the repair, maintenance and repair of high value electronic and mechanical devices and equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients
* Ordering parts and accessories for medical devices and equipment
* Monitoring and rotating stock levels to ensure minimal wastage
* Reviewing working practices, advising on changes and suggesting efficiency improvements.
The postholder will also be expected to carry out the co-ordination of external training on new equipment to clinical/nursing staff, to assist departments and wards in maintaining training records, and to update F2 with details of the training received.

Education, Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
* Good level of general education to GCSE standard or equivalent.
* Engineering qualification, or a Degree in a relevant subject matter or equivalent, together with evidence of specific training in medical devices.
* European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equally demonstrable equivalence.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
* Experience in the repair, maintenance and performance checking of a range of complex specialist medical devices, such as: oInfusion/syringe pumps oDiathermy machines oDefibrillators oPatient monitoring.
* Experience of working with medical device databases.
* Practical experience of using a range of test & measuring equipment and of applying electronic / mechanical engineering workshop practices and techniques.
* Experience with networked medical devices - wired and Wi-Fi.
* Knowledge of engineering theory necessary to efficiently diagnose and rectify faults on complex specialist medical devices.
* Experience of working within a Quality Management System.
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
* Ability to operate equipment worked on, in all modes of operation, in order to safely verify correct operation and aid fault diagnosis.
* Electronic engineering skills including the use of test & measuring equipment, handling and assembly of components and boards, fault finding and diagnosis, use of technical manuals and circuit diagrams.
* Mechanical engineering skills including use of test and measuring equipment, assembly and bonding of components, use of technical manuals and drawings.
* Intermediate IT skills – with MS Office and ability to maintain, interrogate and use the features of a complex database, i.e. F2.
* Good organisational, prioritisation and time management skills – to manage work areas and workload.
* Willingness to continuously develop skills and abilities and to attend in house and external training courses, at base and throughout the UK.
* Wiliness to work towards RCT or IPEM professional membership.
* Flexibility and ability to adapt to continuously improving systems of working.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Good customer relations and interpersonal skills. Able to discuss with nursing, clinical, scientific, and management staff on issues relating to the use of specific medical devices.
* A full U.K. driving licence and own transport is essential for this post as part of the duties include travel for servicing and repair.
