Job Title: Head of Volunteering and Training
Reporting to: Director of Organisational Effectiveness
Based at: The role is based in Head Office at 91-95 Winchester Road, Chandler’s Ford. Some home working is possible and it is expected that at least 60% of the postholder’s time will be spent either in the office, or visiting our shops and Centres/ services in Hampshire, IOW and Dorset.
Job Purpose: To ensure a robust and motivated volunteer group and a strong training programme to help us sustain exceptional emotional and wellbeing services for people with cancer and their loved ones.
Working Hours: 37.5 hours
Salary Scale: In the region of £35,000
Principal Responsibilities
* Ensure that the organisation has a motivated and happy volunteer team in every department supporting our vital work.
* Build on our existing training programme and coordinate the facilitation of our annual calendar of training sessions, ensuring volunteers and employees are equipped with the information and development opportunities required to thrive in their roles.
* Creating new training courses to meet the needs of the organisation, seeking the support of the Director of Organisational Effectiveness and external expertise where required.
* Maintain accurate volunteer and training records, ensuring adherence with GDPR.
* Be the main point of contact for all volunteer and training queries across the organisation.
* Support managers across the organisation to identify and promote volunteering opportunities, and support the onboarding, training, retention and moving on of volunteers.
* Support colleagues across the charity who manage volunteers, including providing advice and coaching on managing volunteer relationships so all volunteers feel well supported.
* Work with our Marketing team to promote volunteering opportunities externally.
* Network and partner with other community organisations to maximise volunteering and training opportunities.
* Implement systems to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of volunteering and training initiatives, including getting volunteer feedback. Use data to improve outcomes for the organisation, volunteers and employees.
* Establish a calendar of regular communication with volunteers, and organise activities to bring volunteers together, and ensure our volunteers know they are a valuable part of the charity.
* Champion our equality, diversity and inclusion policy and ensure it is applied to all volunteering and training opportunities.
* Advocate for our volunteers internally to ensure their views are taken into account in organisational planning.
Essential Skills/Experience/Attributes
* Experience managing and facilitating volunteer and/or training programmes
* Appreciation and understanding of the management needs of volunteers, in particular the differences and similarities between paid staff and volunteers.
* Demonstrably strong communication skills, in person, on phone/Teams and in writing; ability to write compelling volunteer job descriptions and adverts.
* Passionate about the mission of Wessex Cancer Support and committed to making a positive impact.
* Assertive and diplomatic communication skills with the ability to motivate and inspire others and build partnerships.
* Empathetic and compassionate, with a strong understanding of the challenges faced by individuals affected by cancer and therefore the training and support needs of staff and volunteers.
* Innovative and proactive, with a willingness to explore new ideas and approaches.
* Strong administrative skills with proven experience of maintaining records and dealing with a high level of administration.
* Excellent organisation skills for organising training and events.
* IT literate, including with Microsoft packages.
* Good time management with the ability to prioritise work, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
* Experience developing training material for the benefit of employees and/or volunteers.
* Approachable style, with a customer-focused attitude.
