Overview
HR Manager role leading a small but experienced team to deliver a proactive, people-first HR and Payroll service aligned with the company’s strategic goals. You’ll work with the Managing Director and Group HR Director to shape and implement HR initiatives that support Welland Medical now and in the future. The role balances operational and strategic responsibilities across employee relations, performance management, recruitment, engagement and HR data analysis, with support for group-wide HR projects and compliance with employment law.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the HR team, setting goals, coaching performance, and supporting professional development.
* Oversee day-to-day HR operations, providing high-quality advice and support to employees and managers.
* Provide expert HR guidance to senior leaders on policy application and complex employee relations issues.
* Manage absence, grievance and disciplinary cases with fair, consistent decision-making.
* Lead initiatives to improve employee engagement and workplace culture, including post-survey action planning and pulse checks.
* Support and promote Welland as a “Great Place to Work”.
* Collaborate with L&D to shape and deliver training and development programmes; champion management and leadership development.
* Ensure L&D strategy supports succession planning and talent growth.
* Oversee recruitment activity in conjunction with the Recruitment Advisor and wider HR team; partner with senior leaders on senior-level hires, including psychometric testing and feedback; ensure effective onboarding and induction.
* Develop and maintain HR policies and procedures in line with UK employment law; keep the business informed of legislative changes and impact.
* Oversee payroll and pension administration; produce HR metrics and reports; track and analyse employee data to identify trends and risks.
* Lead statutory reporting (e.g., Gender Pay Gap submissions).
* Manage HR department budget, including training, wellbeing and recruitment spend; benchmark salaries and benefits for attraction and retention; ensure alignment with budgets and headcount plans.
* Support cross-group HR projects, including HRIS improvements and policy updates; provide advice to group HR colleagues and contribute to wider HR strategy under the Group HR Director.
* Coach and develop the HR team; stay up to date with HR best practice and CIPD standards.
* Support investigation and reporting of customer complaints; assist with incoming inspection and sampling; contribute to Post-Market Surveillance activities and Lean Manufacturing projects where applicable.
Qualifications & Skills
* CIPD Level 7 qualification (Master’s level) and degree-level education.
* Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Human Resources Manager role, with proven leadership of an HR team.
* Experience in a manufacturing environment.
* Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of UK employment law and regulations.
* Strategic HR Business Partner experience, aligning HR practices with organisational goals.
* Hands-on payroll function experience.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills; strong relationship-building at all levels.
* Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities; ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with HRIS; ability to interpret HR analytics to identify issues and evidence-based solutions.
* Understanding of quality standards in a manufacturing setting.
* Leadership by example with a focus on achieving company goals and fostering a high-performance culture.
* Emotional intelligence to manage people and complex situations well.
* Chartered Fellowship of the CIPD (FCIPD) or active progression toward it; Level A and/or Level B psychometric training is advantageous.
* Experience with continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) and involvement in strategic HR projects.
