About the Role

We are seeking a Learning Mentor to support pupils who encounter social, emotional, personal, or behavioural challenges that impede their learning progress. The role focuses on helping these students overcome barriers, engaging them fully in lessons, and improving academic and pastoral outcomes.


Responsibilities

* Promote consistently high expectations and facilitate good progress through targeted academic and pastoral support.
* Identify students or groups facing learning difficulties and implement initiatives to address barriers.
* Support inclusion for all pupils, including those with special educational needs, English as an additional language, or physical disabilities.
* Develop mentoring programmes that provide academic and personal support from staff and peers.
* Model strong literacy and numeracy skills and motivate pupils toward improvement.
* Create action plans for students with specific difficulties, collaborating with staff and parents/carers.
* Partner with the Transition Mentor to aid successful transition to subsequent educational phases.
* Supervise pupils during structured and unstructured times while maintaining professional boundaries.
* Work with families, pupils, and staff to foster open discussions about needs, expectations, and appropriate support.
* Encourage and demonstrate good behaviour in line with school policy.
* Support pupils’ physical and emotional wellbeing through listening and individual or group sessions.
* Adhere to all relevant legislation, guidance, and procedures for child protection, safeguarding, and health and safety.
* Improve attendance and punctuality rates, recognising links to pupil wellbeing.
* Collaborate with external agencies to support pupil development.
* Attend daily briefings, staff meetings, and team training led by the Head Teacher.
* Show enthusiasm for learning, model this to pupils, and engage with school leadership to implement whole‑school strategies.
* Liaise with families, providing approachable and reliable contact.
* Network with learning mentors and local SEND/safeguarding partners to share best practice.
* Participate in absence management meetings and communicate with parents/carers where appropriate.
* Take part in line management and develop goals for professional development.
* Report to the Head Teacher and senior leadership on pupil progress and attendance.
* Maintain accurate records and prepare written evaluations and reports.


Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* GCSE or equivalent level, including at least a grade C/grade 4 in English and maths.
* Relevant support staff/mentoring qualifications such as Level 2 Award in Mentoring, Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, or T Level in Education and Early Years.


Experience

* Working with children in the relevant age group and managing challenging behaviour.
* Assessing pupils’ needs and learning barriers.
* Delivering programmes for pupils with challenging behaviour (one‑to‑one, small group, and whole‑class activities).
* Coaching and advising staff on suitable behaviour interventions.
* Collaborating closely with families/carers.
* Working with external agencies and participating in related meetings.


Skills and Knowledge

* Strong listening skills and integrity in handling sensitive situations.
* Effective communication with adults and children, both written and verbal.
* Ability to create positive relationships with pupils, staff, and parents/carers.
* Well‑developed understanding of strategies to support young people with challenging behaviour.
* Capability to tailor interventions to individual pupils.
* Excellent understanding of safeguarding policies and child protection roles.
* Flexibility to adapt workload demands and embrace new challenges.
* IT literacy and ability to produce analysis and reports.
