AfC Band 3 (Annex 21) (pro rata) plus a High Secure Environmental Allowance of £1,750.47 per annum (pro rata)

Twoyear fixedterm contract, with the opportunity to move to a permanent role subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship training programme.

We are delighted to invite applications for a Modern Apprentice Cook within the Catering Department at The State Hospital.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to gain practical workplace experience while working towards a recognised vocational qualification in catering. Modern Apprenticeships offer a structured training programme allowing you to learn on the job, develop new skills, and build a strong foundation for a long term career in NHSScotland.

During your two year apprenticeship, you will work towards achieving:

1. SVQ Production Chef (SCQF Level 5)
2. Food Hygiene Certificate
3. Full competency in core kitchen operations
4. Development through regular reviews, learning plans and structured training

You will be based in the Catering Department, supporting the delivery of approximately 500 meals per day for patients, staff, and visitors. You will also contribute to specialist and therapeutic diet preparation and learn to work safely within a high secure healthcare environment.

This is a fixed term Annex 21 Modern Apprenticeship. Successful completion of the programme will allow progression into a permanent Cook role at the appropriate Band 3 starting salary.

Who Can Apply

This Modern Apprenticeship is open to individuals aged 16 to 24, or 16 to 29 for candidates who are care experienced or who have a disability. The age criteria reflect the organisations Recruitment Strategy and are intended to support the attraction of a younger workforce, in line with national health and social care workforce planning arrangements.

Experience

No previous catering experience is required. However, applicants should demonstrate an interest in working as a cook and the ability to develop the following:

5. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to training
6. Good communication and interpersonal skills
7. Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
8. Reliability, motivation, and a professional approach
9. Awareness of hygiene, safety and good working practices
